New payware preserved routes

Post by davvydo »

Its been a while since my last post.
I have been extremely impressed with the latest payware add on - The East Somerset Railway. The creators have really took RW2 up to the next level!

was just wondering if anyone knows what may be the next payware preserved route to be released with new models for them?
I am a tad hooked on preserved routes when it comes to railworks, i would love to have the time and patience to do such a thing like decals and model making but sadly i dont :(

hope there will be the NYMR being made in the not too distant future as payware.
or the Douglas to Port Erin route

P.S. im not hinting, honest!

Why does it need to be payware? Are you saying only payware routes are top quality? The only thing 'wrong' with a great freeware route is that building it takes a lot longer for people who can't afford to dedicate as much time to it. Apart from that a great route is a great route, whether or not it has a price tag.

The NYMR is already available as freeware in the library here - Vern Moorhouse's "Heartbeat Moor" route - and excellent it is too!

Nothing wrong with payware but one advantage of freeware is that the author isn't working to commercial constraints, budgets or deadlines, and can put as much time and trouble into creating exactly what they want as they choose.

hmmm true, just that normally i mean that payware routes usually come with brand new models that run on those railway lines, i have nothing against freeware routes at all though, im all for it

The same author is also working on the Mid-Hants Railway, and possibly later the Severn Valley Railway. So we're doing pretty well for UK preserved railways at the moment.

If I'd have anything payware, I'd like it to be 'on-the-shelf', in other words available in shops as I've so far not been one to order stuff. However RW has always been lacking in the shop stuff, relying largely on online sales.

I've done quite a few preserved routes as freeware though, and will continue as long as suitable stock and gradient profiles can be sourced.

However it is nice to have new models with custom cabs and sounds included, although even with MSTS not all payware producers were bothered or able to do such work. The most memorable MSTS addon I had was, surprisingly, the SVR.

I'm still working on, in between others, the whole original 44 mile Isle of Man steam network. Unfortunately, due to restrictions of stock and track, I'm working to standard gauge.
At a guess I would say I'm about 60% done (9 miles is up any running here http://members.uktrainsim.com/filelib-i ... leid=24859 ) and there's just a few more villages to complete before I fill in the countryside bits.

regards
Phil
For disclosure, I am affiliated with a third party developer however, I do not know anything about any future releases unless I'm working on them and even then, I'd be breaking years worth of built up trust to say anything about it ;-)

You are "clever enough" you know. Making a route isn't that difficult and there are plenty of tutorials/helpful people out there for when you do get stuck.

You should give it a go.

I agree, look at David for a start and what he has achieved with his "Hints of Hadleigh" project. He probably felt the same, approached route building with trepidation but achieved immediate results. Now, its a very fine looking route.

There is no harm in having a bit of practice, only one word of warning though, you may become addicted.

A year ago I couldn't write a scenario. Now I'm most of the way into creating a 35 mile accurate recreation of a closed route and have reskinned a whole bunch of stock. You honestly CAN do things if give it a go. It is the most rewarding thing I've done in years. Also the most frustrating, time consuming and addictive :D

There was a "Midland Railway Centre" route in progress that looked very accurate and I believe had some custom buildings too. I think it was finished but never uploaded to UKTS due to the builder thinking there was very little interest here. Does anyone know what happened to it or provide a download link?

Thanks for the plug on HBM, Ash!

My route based on the Vale of Rheidol is also in the library and my next project, hopefully due for release in mid-June, includes a section based on an Australian heritage railway!

While there were a few payware preserved lines for MSTS (SVR and WSR), the appeal of these to a commercial producer might be limited largely due to the restrictions on operating - 25 MPH speed limit and fairly simple A to B operation. My memory is a bit hazy now but I do recall when Blue Arrow did the SVR they got some sort of exclusivity deal, to the extent that freeware versions of the route were discouraged. Not a path we really want to go down in RW.
