A Line in the Chilterns

Post by plewsy2105 »

hi all

i am planning/going to build a section of the line from verney junction to amersham via Aylesbury including the branch line to princes risborough the stations will be

Verney junction, calvert, Quainton Road (currently the base of the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre), Aylesbury Town, Stoke Mandeville, Wendover, great missenden and Amersham.

the branch line station's will be Aylesbury Town, Little Kimble, Monks Risborough and Princes Risborough.

the line will be set in the 1950's to the 1980's although some of the stations had been closed by the 1980's

so far im still getting used to using RW decal (a very nice tool for a route builder very easy to use) i have currently modelled Aylesbury as it is today but when i get a track plan of Aylesbury i will be making some changes :D

if i manage to get this route finished i will upload it here, although i may take it to bletchley and London (someday  )

anyway here's a pic of what iv done so far :D

here's Aylesbury Station and the TMD
Image

any advise or help will be most welcome.

Nice one. Glad to see you've made a start.

Advice?
- Don't worry about how long it takes.
- Don't be afraid to start things from scratch if you're not happy with what you've done the first time around.
- Enjoy it. If you're not really enjoying it then there's not a lot of point in carrying on flogging away at it.
- Make sure you keep us updated!
- Don't be afraid to ask, no matter how daft you feel asking the question.

Good luck. :D

Cheers

Hi Plewsey2105
I can supply all the track plans for the 1950's of the stations you are talking about, but I dont have any 1980's track plans. In the 1960's I was a passenger guard at Southall and now and then worked from Princess Risborough. So if you need the graidents from Princess Risborough to Aylesbury I have them

Sorry, I can never remember how to do the links correctly, and I'm not 100% sure exactly which one you'll need.

There are brief instructions on the download page as to where to put the files. If nothing happens when you press 't' double check that you don't have your lon/lat values transposed in your route template - this is a common mistake.

Sounds like a great project. I've been doing CK&P for about 3 months, and it honestly gets easier... but you will get better with practice.

There's some very useful info out there, start with Keith Ross's sticky thread for tips on routebuilding, but its well worth browsing the whole of this section of the forum.

The things that have really helped me (aside from RW Decal and RW tools) are:

- 1:25000 OS maps of the area. Try Bing Maps http://www.bing.com/maps
- good gradient profile http://www.amazon.co.uk/BR-Main-Line-Gr ... 0711008752 may cover it but check before you buy
- as many books on the line as you can get your hands on. http://www.abebooks.co.uk/ is very good at finding out of print and cheap second hand copies
- cab ride footage (wish I had!)
- track plans - for old ones that you can't get hold of, a screen print of a 1:2500 at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html will give you pretty good detail

Pick your track early on if you're not using default and if you are going to set up a track rule it may save you a bit of time later. I ended up relaying mine entirely! Have a look at other people's routes - I learnt a lot from Port Road, Wales and Borders and WCML north for ideas on how to model things.

If you need any help then post and i'm sure you'll get some good advice - we've all been there

Enjoy the journey

When you create a new post, there is a little reminder of how to do under the part of the screen you write in.

My railway photos are now on Google + - links to the albums are in this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=149558

Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.

hi all

thanks for all the information guys some interesting bits there  cab ride footage shouldn't be a problem for me seeing as i drive a section of the route on a weekly basis :D

iv downloaded both files and have followed the instructions to the letter but im having a bit of trouble getting the terrain to form because when i press T nothing happens iv checked the lat/long values but these appear to be correct :-?

many thanks

Well I never did. So there is! Thanks.

So in your C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\DEM\SRTM folder you've got the hgt files?

And in your Route Template the Origin Longitude is the smaller number (probably negative)?

When you're in the World Editor make sure you've clicked on the Object Tools icon (the house at the very top left next to the tool box) before you press 't'.

Are you absolutely sure that your route is using your new template?

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head at the minute.

Keep at it - this is one of the most frustrating parts of starting off with a new route.

Cheers

That's what it is then. I know I've struggled with it before, and I've seen plenty of others having similar issues.

Glad you've got it sussed out. :)

So far so good with Aylesbury. Looking forward to seeing how you progress with it.
