Idiots guide to signals?

Hello,
After watching RSAdam’s video of what can get done in an hour (if you’re really, really good). I thought I’d give it a try.
Currently I have no route I want to build as I’m struggling with World editor. I figured that I’d try to set myself a few simple goals to start with.
My first goal is to have a single line with a passing siding, signal it, place AI trains at opposite ends and get them to drive to the other end.
Does anyone know of a guide that will help me do this? I’d prefer something I can print out rather than a video.
One final thing, can I remap the camera controls from the arrow keys to a wsad configuration? If not, has anyone had any joy with using one of these contraptions?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Shad.
P.S. Is it me, or is the RW Wiki about as much use as a chocolate teapot when starting out?

I will create this guide for you if you want, you may then upload it to UKTS if you find it useful enough. Am I right in assuming you just want to have a length of track and then have one siding (only) at this stage?
Which point would you like me to start from? Shall I make this guide include the single stretch of track already or build it from scratch?
Also, what sort of signalling are you after? Semaphore or electric?
Let me know and I can begin (I have all night). If you'd prefer to PM me then feel free!
I don't know the answer to your question regarding the camera controls, sorry.
Joe

I'd start with a stretch of line with a passing loop halfway along, maybe do 2 versions in the pack, one with semaphores and one with lights. Include the laying of the line if you would, it would also be a benefit to me when I start out building a route after christmas.

Alright, it seems there's big demand for this already!
On the premise that it's easier to print something and read it rather than rewind a video and listen to my voice many times, I will make this a .pdf and upload it to UKTS when I'm done. If people like the format enough, I'll consider more tutorials if people would like them. Note that I'm usually very busy with other things so I can't spend too long on each.
Watch this space!

Update:
I've just finished a basic (and it is basic) step-by-step 49 page tutorial (don't worry, they're more like slides than pages!) which I think are useful for anyone new to route building. Took me about 6 hours to do just a semaphore version, but if there's enough call for it then I can do the same for electric signals. The files are currently awaiting approval and there is a high quality and a low quality version. If you're really new to route building, I'd recommend the high quality version as the pictures' text is readable and much more useful. Other than that, the files are identical. They are in .pdf format so they should be compatible with all machines.
If there's anything wrong or that I could add, please let me know on here, via PM or via email (in the file).
Good luck to all the budding new route builders out there, I look forward to seeing what you can do!

Dear Tyburn,
Wow!
Thank You!
All I was hoping for was a link to a web page or two. I'm surprised and delighted you've taken take six hours to put together a ~50 page tutorial.
Marvelous!
Although the upload has not been approved yet (09:19 GMT), I'm sure it will go a long way to help in these early stages of getting used to the world editor.
Once again, I can't thank you enough for your time.
During my hunting about for help, I found that a chap called pikehiker has a six part video tutorial on signaling. I've only watched the first one so far but if anyone else is looking for basic help these may prove useful:

Hello Shad,
I've just sent you a PM. Perhaps you could get back to us on the forums once you've given it a go to give the others a bit of an insight as to what you think. This way, when the files are approved, we'll know they won't be a total flop.
Thanks!
Joe

Morning all,
Just to let you know that in the last few minutes, my files have been approved and are now available to download. If you're not a premium member, I would recommend that you consider the sizes of both the high and standard quality versions as the download will take longer for the high quality version (6.5 MB ish vs 1.6 MB ish).
Enjoy.
Joe

Congratulations Joe,
I've just had a check and seen well over 400 downloads for the high and low quality version. Well done and thank you for your help!
Best regards,
Shad.

Thank you everyone for your kind words (including those that have left comments in some way, shape or form) - I am overwhelmed with the apparent success of these simple tutorials. For something I rushed based on a request in the forum to be as well-received as it seems to have been is something I'm quite proud of! I never would have thought it would amount to much.
If there is demand for it, I can update this manual to include more and/or publish separate items. Seeing as it was bashed out in a single evening for the purpose of helping a couple of people out, there are things missing and a couple of errors, but with your help, we can iron these out and inspire more people to start building. I don't claim that this is the ultimate guide; by all means it isn't - I recommend better documentation or tutorials where I've glossed over something simply because they've already been described so well by somebody else.
So, thanks for your interest in these two files - over 500 downloads in just over 12 hours is quite monumental! If only my route sells at this rate when I finally complete it then I won't need to win the lottery anymore! Haha.
Please post up any problems/difficulties you may be having, likewise things you'd like to see. Shad has already asked me about a few things that I missed out, so I will post these on here if he feels we should all know about them.
I hope you enjoy the tutorial and that it brings you many hours of creative fun.
Good luck!
Joe

Just had a complete read through of the guide and it all sounds pretty simple, just got to wait for my copy of RW2 to arrive so I can put it all into practice. Unfortunately, route editors, (and this is not just aimed at Kuju here,) seem to be created with the premise that users will have previous route building knowledge with another simulator and therefore be able to jump in and get started straight away and then be able to understand the "expert" tutorials for thing they aren't sure on.
This, as I mentioned before, will be my first real attempt at creating an interesting and usable route and your guide has already saved me potentially weeks of fiddling or possible even prevented me from giving up after an hr or 2.
