DEM Issue

Post by pitleyfalley »

Hello,

Ive been trying to set up a new route in Rail Works - so far so good, got the coordinates sorted, and got the route to appear. Ive also downloaded the right DEM data.

Following the instructions on the RW Tools editor help, and from bits ive found on the UKTS forum I managed to get some the hills to appear. Having done a couple round the start point of the route I thought id take a break, try and get a marker file sorted out and then go back and only create the terrain I actually needed.

No joy with the marker file so using a few coordinates I started working my way down the route plotting it out a bit. I then went to raise the terrain along a few more sections and now get the following message:
Something bad happened in your program, would you like to see a diagnostic file? If you click no it crashes out of RW, if you click yes it doesnt bring up a file and again crashes out of RW.
tried this a few times, no joy. So deleted the route and set it up again, now i can't get any terrain at all, same error as before. Have I missed a trick here? Or do I need to have something selected or ticked to get this to work?

Cheers Chris

When you create a new route, there is this issue that no terrain is shown.
Go into your route and set the objects filter for the Developers; the Kuju/RailSimulator ones need to be ticked.
Save and exit the route, and go back in.
There is a topic about this somewhere on the forum, will try to find it if needed

Edit:
Topic is the sticky 'Tutorial Route Building' by keitmhross , link http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 97&start=0. In his third post in that thread under Blueprints you will see the remark about terrain not showing

The normal flat green terrain was there to begin with so didnt need to check the box as suggested in the help guide. However when I looked it was already selected. Its a new version of RW so it might be that the bug has been fixed.

Getting flat green terrain is fine. Getting DEM hills was fine and then has suddenly caused this error message. I presume its something 'ive done to cause it but can't work out what!

Hi Chris,
I think this thread tried to deal with it
http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 4&t=107462

something to do with the accuracy of the DEM data or something

Is this the old dear good fella T-Key crash ? If yes, please send the crash report to RS support. Maybe another drop in the bucket could trig them to finally pay attention on this bug.

Hi Chris

I suppose I'm lucky, the project I'm on only covered 1 DEM 'block' so it wasn't an issue. Wish I could've been more help

Good luck

Okies, began again from scratch with the route as well today. Does anyone have a link for downloading UK DEM data that is known to actually work? Have hunted around for some but not knowing a lot about DEM and SRTM data im not 100% im downloading the right stuff!

Chris,
did today's update (v110.8b) resolve the issue you had with DEM in general?

Well sort of got to a halfway house, got RW updated. Went into the route and hit T - good news no crash - bad news no terrain. Tried a few times, cleared the cache etc as per the instructions in the other forum, so going to have another go at create the route and see if it works on a totally new build of it.

I used to get that problem all the time. I found if I go to the route editor, after pressing the blue box to bring up the providers pop out menu on the right of the screen. right click the mouse in the centre of the screen then press t.
If you do a left click on the mouse, it closes the providers menu and it won't work, it seems to me the providers menu needs to be open for 't' to work.
If you just open the providers menu and press 't' it thinks your looking for an asset starting with T in the asset menu on the left.
It took me a few goes but in the end you'll get it sort.
