Well, I think I've got it nailed:

As outlined by Joe: loft a section of 3D bridge, stick a bend in it, job done. Only variation on what was originally envisaged is that rather than taking one bit of wall and adding two gradient pivot points to it, I took one and put one pivot in it, then copied it three more times, flipping it twice
Trying to put two bends in it was seeing the textures smear way too much and also resulted in some very uneven and odd geometry.
I'll probably re-skin Dunc's girders to be more like the prototype I'm trying to emulate.
Still have a lot of shrubbery to fling about to disguise some of the more obvious joins, etc. but I'm getting the hang of it slowly.
Got a bit of a dilemma with my platform end here as the real one had about 10 feet of "ramp" that extended up to the edge of the bridge, but was only about 2ft wide. Not sure how to tackle that one...
