DEM/Decal co-ordination

Post by Austcoop »

Hello all,

I think i've asked this question once already, but the same issue is really confusing me. Basically, it is as follows;

I wish to build a prototype route. I download the required DEM files using the handy little 'correct DEM' tool to identify the correct files. I use Google Earth to get the exact co-ordinates for the start point of my route. I create my blueprint using the co-ordinates. I use RW Decal to get the decals for my route. I fire up RW and get my new route running. I press 'T' to activate my terrain DEM files. This is the bit that is driving me crackers.

How then do I co-ordinate my decal to match the terrain? Is it a matter of trial and error (quite a lot of it if the terrain squares are 1km square!), or is there something I'm missing here?? When I've tried to match my decal to the ground it looks nothing like! I tried to identify the hills and valleys on my terrain square using google maps with the terrain contours turned on, but I can't seem to pin point where I should be starting.

If you are using RWdecal, then make sure your setting for it creates corner/center markers, and then turn on route markers in the bottom left flyout.

As Trainguy says, RWdecal practically does it all for you. Just line up the decals with the RWdecal markers, (the flags with the class 37 on them). If you're not sure, watch the RWdecal tutorials on YouTube, they explain it all very well.

The lining up of decals and terrain is automatic. Decals are automatically calibrated using long and lat values (and converted to UTM format that RW uses). The same thing happens for the DEM terrain data.

So...

The terrain when you press the T key is exactly where it should be in real life. When you create decals the decal marker flags are also exactly where they should be in real life. So you line the decal up to the marker and everything sorted. Just lay the track.

If your fine with creating the decals etc then I would think the following video is what you need. Using centre markers only (no corner markers at all) gives the least amount of clutter in the markers window and is also the quickest. Best of both worlds :)

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. I have finally managed to solve my problem. When I created my blue print, I used Google Earth to put a marker in the centre of my start point and used the co-ordinates from this as the lat/long values in the blueprint. For some bizarre reason, the series markers (although done at the same time) were quite a way out from the centre marked on GE. I had placed the marker in the centre of a small terminus station, so it wasn't as though i was trying to place it on the other side of a city! When i delved deeper, I opened my Route markers file and entered the first series marker co-ordinates into the compass fly out box. Hey presto! Instantly took me to where it should be and the decals now match the terrain! Problem solved!
