Tennessee Pass

Post by jonathanmlewis »

Over the last few years I have been building the former Denver and Rio Grande Westerns Tennessee Pass through the Colorado Rocky mountains for Rail Works/Rail Sim as anyone over at train-sim.com may be aware. The route is currently on its 7th Beta release at a length of about 190 miles from Pueblo (milepost 120) to Minturn (milepost 303) plus two branches to Monarch and to Leadville/Climax(each about 10-15 miles). All the route currently has a 'fair' level of scenery with all major roads and rivers in place and some buildings close to the railway in town. However with a lack of western American buildings this has been difficult.

Anyway a beta release can be downloaded from the link below any constructive comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Really? which direction from Denver did you head? (I ask because a route I'm planning goes from Denver to Utah.)

Are you using ReDEM?

The route starts at Pueblo at the south end of the Joint Line 120 miles south of Denver. The route heads west from Pueblo to Canon City through the Royal Gorge to Salida where it when heads northwest over the Tennessee Pass (elevation 10,200 feet) to Minturn however this route has been closed since soon after the Union Pacific takeover over the Southern Pacific in 1997. I take it you are planning on building the Moffat Route west of Denver?

I'm not sure the screenshots I posted are working as I hot-linked them from train-sim.com but I will try and put them somewhere that will work later today.

Erm... I know it goes from Denver to Glenwood Springs, then onto Utah. (I don't know all these names of routes.)

The screenshots in the first post work.

If you look at http://www.ghostdepot.com/rg/index2.htm the Moffat Route goes direct from Denver to Glenwood Springs however the route was only completed in 1934. Before that the former Rio Grande main line was south to Pueblo before you could head west via the Royal Gorge to Salida where the Tennessee Pass route heads north up to Minturn and onto Glenwood Springs/Grand Junction. After 1934 the Tennessee Pass route become a secondary line until the Rio Grande gained trackage rights to Kansas City from Pueblo putting the line back as a trans continental route which was made more the case with the Rio Grande/Southern Pacific merger in 1988 giving the SP a 'Central Corridor' from Kansas to the Pacific. However with the Union Pacific Southern Pacific merger in 1996 all through trans continental traffic was rerouted on the UP main line through Wyoming meaning there was no need for the Tennessee Pass which saw its last train in August 1997. The UP have not officially closed the route and it is 'rail banked' but most of the line has not seen a train 1997. So perhaps one day the highest and most scenic railroad line in North America will see another train again. Anyone enough of Western Railroad history.

As I said the route in its current form can be downloaded from http://www.otto-wipfel.co.uk/rw-downloa ... -10-rw.rar

A really fantastic route.

I do have crashing issues from place to place but determined to drive it all even though taken a couple of scenarios and a separate installation of RW to do it.

Hope you carry on with it.

regards and thanks

Hello,

Downloaded this the other day and ran the route. I must say I am extremely impressed with it. Best route I have on railworks. I love the long haul routes and this pass is just extraordinary. I live in Colorado so being able to run trains in my home state is amazing. Great work. I would also love to see rollins pass/moffet tunnel route. And include the ski train. That would be another excellent route. But as far as Tennessee pass goes I really love this route. Defiantly going to take some screen shots of this route with the Rio Grande SD70ACe when it comes out. Thanks for the great route. You did an excellent job. Like I said this is my absolute favorite route I have on railworks. I like it better than any of the add-ons I have. Keep up the great work.

Thanks so much,
Zeb

Been running the various versions of this route for some time and it really is a great route passing through some reallyrugged scenery.

Working a big consist over the rockies takes a fair bit of skill. Some of the mountain gorges are awesome.

Hi all,
Where can you obtain this route from - the links do not work.
Ottodads RW Downloads index does not show TP as an option.

Enjoy - it is a faboulous route for a long haul. Beware the North approach to the Tennesse Pass is really brutal - both ways!

I did a run in misty conditions and it felt very very isolated across the top.
