Terraforming - What am I doing wrong?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to terraform my route using DEM data but when I press t nothing happens.

I have the data in the SRTM folder and made a successful blueprint. When I enter the editor, the lon/lat co-ordinates are correct for the area and what I entered in the blueprint editor.

I'm also 99% sure I have the correct grid reference found in the tutorial links (the 1% being my inability to think :D ) and I have read through all the excellent tutorials on here ref route building. The exception being EXACTLY how RW makes use of the .hgt file once its in place and if there's anything I need to do other than go into the route editor and press t.

I noticed some people added a tip saying not to be in terrain mode when trying. So I'm in the buildings menu when attempting it.

Any help would be great. Many Thanks.

Ant :D

Hi batling
Are you up and running yet.
Just to make sure this is the Lat: Lon: for Derby Rail Station.
Lat: 52.916113
Lon: -1.462668

Hope you included the minus sign on the Lon: some have omitted this and got lost.
regards
buckeye.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

@buckeye - I do indeed have the minus in the coordinates, I've double checked its right from GE and my DEM data covers the right area. Thinking about starting fresh with the blueprint to see if I've done anything wrong.

Hi Geoff, I've read through the thread while I was learning how to find all the data I need, it seems there isn't any more to it so I can't figure out whats wrong  .

One thing I wanted to ask you though, when I created my blueprint I and exported it I got an .xml file but no .bin as shown in your screenshot, is this incorrect as the route loads perfectly from the template? The only difference being I get grid of blue squares instead of the sky dome only, however after the object set filter has been ticked and route reloaded, its green grass as far as the eye can see! :D So as far as I can tell the route works fine. Its just when it comes to that pesky t button...

Hi,

Altho' you mention the SRTM folder you don't mention the full path........... perhaps you should check the full path is correct ?
I checked in Rail Simulator and my full path was........

C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator\DEM\SRTM

So perhaps check that in RW you have your HGT files in a DEM\SRTM folder in your RW folder ?

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul.

I've rechecked the path and it's in C:/ProgramFiles/Steam/SteamApps/common/railworks/DEM/SRTM

Any other ideas anyone?

Its really frustrating :D

I've just gone through my blueprint and the Environment\Terrain\Texturing path is from RailSimulator not RW. Would that cause a problem or is this correct? Also I went into my Rail Simulator folder and I don't have a DEM folder in there...Odd

Hi batling
Have you checked the blueprint for any spelling mistakes.
No mention of the blueprint yet.
Good luck
Buckeye.

Hi buckeye,

I've checked the blueprint a few times and everything is correct.

I do only get an .xml file in my route template folder, no bin, I don't know if this is correct or not. Also when the route is loaded up I have 'blue' terrain grided out not the sky dome on its own as shown in Geoff's tutorial...but when the object set filters are ticked and then route reloaded the 'green' terrain is there.

Then I press 't' and nothing ( this is done under the buildings flyout to clarify ).

Also I've been setting up a series marker in GE, and in the RW wiki it says after all your markers are placed and saved go to the file where the info is and right click save ( so you can then transfer it to Excel )... but it doesn't say where the file is or should be... :-? :-? and I can't find it searching through my PC. Stuck at every turn. :D

Again any help is appreciated, I really want to create my next route from scratch but I'm finding holes in everything.

Hi Ant

With the DEM problem, everything seems to point to the route being in a different location to the DEM files you have. It sounds as though the blueprint is OK and the terrain correctly appears when you set the Kuju assets through the object set filter.

I am sure you have checked this but can you say what the lat and long readings are in the Compass Window at the top of the screen when you load up your route?

Right, the Lat as seen in the compass flyout is: 50.16727 and the Lon is: -5.44881. This is a few ft give or take from where my origin point is in the blueprint.

And this is the hgt file number I have: N50W006. Which according to the grid map of the uk available through UKTS is the correct one for the area.

Hi Ant

At the moment I cannot see anything wrong with what you have done. You have the right hgt file for your route origin, the route behaves correctly when tick the correct files in the object set filter, etc.

I know that I usually have hgt files for a wide area around a route so one suggestion is that you get the files for the eight areas around N50W006 as well.

I have not experimented but if you are pressing 't' then perhaps you should be pressing 'T' with the shift held down.

The bit about not having a .bin file in your route template does not mean much to me at the moment but I am going to create a new route as a test and see if there is anything else to look out for.

Hi Ant

I have just created a new route template from my instructions and immediately after the export from the blueprint editor, the new folder is created in RailWorks/Assets and in the RouteTemplates folder of my new route there is a .xml file AND a .bin file. If you have the .bin file missing immediately after exporting then that may be the problem.

I can suggest you carefully check out this -

and see that all the capital letters are there, all slashes go in the right direction and that everything is spelt correctly in your blueprint. If you find any mistakes, correct them and export the blueprint again. You may have to delete the route you created (select, press delete key on keyboard) and create a new route from your updated template.

You are right that the terrain path is to RailSimulator and not RailSimulatorCore.

Thanks for your help Geoff,

I also thought the same thing and tried pressing T with shift down with the same result.

Origionally I had the wrong hgt file in place - it was N50W005 and I did have both in the SRTM file together. However I shall take your advice and get the 7 other areas together and try again. If I just drop these files in and try the route again will RW recognise this or do I have to start again?

EDIT: I'll go through it again and see if I've missed anything.
