Hi Andy

You seem to have all the correct files. You can check out the areas covered by with this utility - http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info. ... ileid=7390

I have built several routes now using DEM and I have never had a problem in raising terrain so whatever the problem is it cannot be that serious.

The terrain rises in blocks under the camera position and then you have to move forward, press 'T' again and keep on running up and down your route area until you have raised all of the terrain you want. When you enter your route the origin co-ordinates show in the drop down window at the top of the screen. Check that the long and lat have not been transposed or that you have not missed off a minus sign. It is possible that your route is not actually located where you thought it was.

Other than that I cannot think of any other possibilities at the moment.

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for your really quick reply.
This is new information. I'm sure I read elsewhere that the terraform did 9 tiles at a time. Acedemic though. When I got the screenshot below, I tried again and still no luck.

I'm sure the route is in the correct place. Nice try, though, sir.

Have a Merry X.

Hi

I think you are missing the first HGT tile which I think should be N51W004. Obtain this and try again.

Hi Geoff,

I am utterly in awe! You are my Christmas Angel!
Installed the .HGT tile you suggested and... Bingo! I now have terrain.
Thank you very much. Could I PayPal you a pint of Christmas cheer?

I'd be interested to know how you knew what to do in order to fix my problem. Is it that I need the next set of tiles immediately outside the boundaries of my route?

Top man. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Cheers,

AndyR

Hi

It was quite simple

Referring to the chart - http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info. ... ileid=7390

Looking at the co-ordinates in your Compass Window, you are located to the west of tile N51W003 which is N51W004. The tiles in the grid relate to the area to the East and North of the HGT file name so file N51W004 covers west 0003 to west 0004 which includes -3.19337.

If you have the time it might be a good idea to download as many HGT files as you can for the UK as once in the DEM folder they are available for any route you build in the future in this area.

Happy Christmas :x-mas:

Hi Geoff,

What a donkey I am. I was working from the Greenwich meridian outwards and thinking that tile 3 included all up to 4. Also I only learned to count above three last week :D
I've now sprayed terrain over my entire route and it looks the business. I think I'll go for the coastline next.
I read a "start a route from scratch" tutorial elsewhere on this forum. I'm going to find it again and print it (directly onto my brain cell).

I'm taking your advice and getting all the UK terrain.

Thanks again.

Ah, start a route from scratch, that would probably be this - http://www.uktrainsim.com/index2.php?fo ... tebuilding

Tutorials on adding a route description and adding DEM data to follow, but you have already worked out the latter.

Here also - http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-direc ... ath=,ty=17 - for Rail Simulator I know but just about the same for RailWorks.

Hi Andy
Yep Geoffs a smart cookie!
Wish i had read this thread sooner,as it seems we are both building the same route,i could have helped you out with the terrain forming,no matter geoff is the expert on these matters, he helped me with my RS version of West Somerset, incidently the revamped version for RW should be out next month.
Best of luck with the route.

Hi Kevin

If you want the WSR RailWorks version tested then let me know.

BTW - I often check in to the webcam at Minehead Station, even though the winter. In the early evening you can see the steam locos parked up in the station lights with wisps of steam wafting across the screen every now and then as they cool down.

Hi guys,

One of the reasons I chose to try and model the WSR is that it's only 5 miles up the road and I can do research at minimal cost. Photos etc. It's good for the railway. I am a WSRA member and each visit puts cash in their coffers. You know what they say about your local facilities - use it or lose it.
I also got the MSTS add-on, liked it but MSTS is a bit old now. I downloaded Kevin's earlier version and liked that. I really wanted to do something creative and this seemed like a good opportunity.
I have to say that, with Geoff's help, RW Tools, RW Decal and this forum, I managed to get as far as terrain, coastline, main single track, the turning triangle and a test loco. I am expecting to get an infusion of data soon by means of the latest Quail, hopefully Ian Coleby's definitive history and some help from Steve Edge. The only blot on the horizon is my lack of talent.
I still have a lot of tools and techniques to acquire but I figure I might have something usable in a couple of years.
Some years ago I got Solidworks and tried to learn it. I think it must be the only 3D modelling package which won't help with RW. Ces't la vie.

Hey Kevin, I don't think my route will be any competition to yours since I don't have any plans to release it into the wild even if it got finished. If it turns out OK then I might have a go at the Mineral Line.
