Oh real fast for the UK viewers. I never got to see the Big Boy in person until this past weekend. I waited 3hrs until I could get a shot of the thing with a grown adult standing right up against and in front of it so I had something to give a good contrast to just how gigantic this thing really is.

Sly did a great job of representing it's sheer jaw dropping size from the pics and video he's posted. It's an instant purchase for me.

edit: Just saw Slys reply on the previous page. That's cool. It wasn't a "deal breaker" or even close to it. Just conversing is all.

Hi

In what way is the valve gear out of position ?

If you mean that the front engine rods are not in the same position as the rear .. that is intentional and entirely realistic. :D
It is my interpretation that this gives added visual apperance.

There is no link between the front and rear locomotives, and if the discussion is about sync betwen the two locomotives .. they are in sync but that does not mean the wheel positions have to be the same ... they are 90 degree synched. in other words the power strokes match.

If you are refering to the fact that actually there is no quartering between the left and right side wheels..
I make no apology for chosing a simpler method of construction and animation that uses substancially fewer resources... you can't see both sides of the locomotive at the same time.
I would much sooner use the resources to actually animate the motion in forward gear.. something that I believe is still unique to myself in Railworks :D

Cheers

Sly
No, that's not what I meant. The Walschaerts valve gear is in the reversed position, which would be common in a S160 2-8-0 locomotives. The valve gear needs to be in forward position as it did on the prototype, like this:

No not that part of the valve gear, the position of it on the wheel is what I meant.

Sorry you have lost me completely now... the loco is modelled in forward gear with the rear engine 90 synced to the front engine..

As far as I can see there are no problems with the valve gear.. and yours is the first mention I have heard.

Gimme some details :D

My apologies, I am getting you confused. Here's a better way to explain. See where the valve gear is connected to the wheel right? It turns ahead of the wheel. To better understand go to this link: http://steamlocomotive.com/appliances/valvegear.php and scroll down to see Walschaerts valve gear. The animation will show how the vavle gear would run on an actual Big Boy. If you still not understanding, don't worry. Your Big Boy is still incredible!

Hiya

I fully understand most types of valve gear, but I fail to see what problem you are refering to.

Perhaps using the correct terminoligy? would help........ which link do you think is out of position ?

Back on track so to speak, an incredibly ignorant question, but are these locos UK standard gauge? I quite fancy giving one a run between Oxford and Padd
