I'm playing "Shells from Stanlow" from the GSC large download pack (my first freeware add-ons), and something's odd with the loco engine sound.
The 'canned' throttle-up noises are fine, but the background EE splutter (as should be) is either underwater, or has been replaced by something from Space Invaders - an odd sort of 'phasing' effect, the pitch of which seems to decrease as I increase throttle. Previously, the default 37 has sounded fine although I haven't tried it again since installing GSC.
Are these locos using patched sound? What file should I be looking to check or replace? Trial and error is rather frustrating as my system takes well over five minutes to load a scenario...
Thanks!

It'd probably be worth while doing just that, to determine if its an issue with the locos or the scenario.ttjph wrote:Previously, the default 37 has sounded fine although I haven't tried it again since installing GSC

Have just started New Arrival, and the green one still sounds normal.gptech wrote:It'd probably be worth while doing just that, to determine if its an issue with the locos or the scenario.ttjph wrote:Previously, the default 37 has sounded fine although I haven't tried it again since installing GSC

Re: Cl37 sound messed up in GSC pack
There was a thread on this recently.

It seems that you tend to get phasing/flanging effects when there are two similar units close together emitting the same sound at a given time, such as two locos of the same class double heading, like on shells from stanlow. You can get these sort of effects in real life (it was used during wwII by the luftwaffe & RAF on strategic bombing raids - reduce the RPM of one or two engines very slightly compared to the others, and you'd get a throbbing pulsing effect; it was supposed to be harder to pinpoint this sound from the ground). It's particularly pronounced sometimes in Railworks because 2 similar locos coupled together give out identical sounds, not just similar.
I get this a lot with certain units, especially 4CIG, class 101 and sometimes 450. It seems very prevalent on Portsmouth Direct, and seems to happen more when the programme's under heavier load eg, station approaches etc that hit framerates. Someone did mention that any multiple unit would suffer from this, but I don't get it on any of the Thomson/Oovee sprinters. Strange, as 156 sets are made up of 2 identical units next to each other, which is normally a good condition for this sort of sound distortion.
Do you have a separate sound card or are you on onboard sound? I'm wondering whether a discrete sound card might improve things.

Re: Cl37 sound messed up in GSC pack
That seems likely, thinking about it - and yes, it's onboard sound. Hmm - I might have an old Soundblaster in the loft...
In real life, behind a Deltic in a tunnel, it sounds awesome (as the second engine hits full power it goes from "that sounds nice" to hairs-on-neck-standing-on-end)
but on Shells from Stanlow it just sounded wrong.
As you say, having two identical sound sources is likely to be part of it - I also wonder whether the volume/distance relationship for the rear loco would make a difference. Otherwise we'll have to wait for RSC to set a small random offset in the locos' throttle/rpm response.
