Hi Ross and welcome to this forum

First of all, when you install new routes, stock etc. make it a habit to clear the cache by clicking on the "Clear Cache" button under the 'Tools and Docs' tab of the RW opening screen.

As far as the installation of the Class 317 / 318 is concerned you must read the 'Read Me' document that comes with the download (Good idea to make that a habit too  ) You will see that you install via the 'Package Manager' tab but you have to do a bit more. In this (Cl 317) case you find the following additional instruction in the Read Me:

- Copy the file cl317_mapper.bin to the directory <RailSim home directory>\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorCore\InputMappers. -

Good luck an do come back when you have further questions

You don't, the copying you need to do is via 'Windows Explorer' or 'My Computer'.
Start up either of those programs and navigate to where you installed the game---most probably "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks" and continue down the directory structure till you get to "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorCore\InputMappers"

This is where you need to copy the "cl317_mapper.bin" file from the downloaded package. You can either drag and drop the file into the directory, or right click it and choose 'copy', then right clicking in some empty space in the directory you want to copy it to and choosing 'paste'

ok this is the installation instructions

Installation
------------

Unzip the archive into a temporary directory.
Use the Railsimulator package installer to install the class317_1_a1.rpk file.
Copy the file cl317_mapper.bin to the directory
<RailSim home directory>\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorCore\InputMappers.
Ensure the file <RailSim home directory>\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorCore\Blueprints.pak
is deleted then run the sim.

now do i use the package manager or package tab to install the class317_1_a1.rpk file.

then i take it i follow the <RailSim home directory>\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorCore\InputMappers. is accesed using the tabs on the left which i understand

but what i done get is this bit............ Ensure the file <RailSim home directory>\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorCore\Blueprints.pak
is deleted then run the sim.

what is it i delete and how do i get to that bit

after doing all that do i clear the cache

Hi Ross

When you clear the cache you actually delete all Blueprints.pak files. That is what 'clear cache' is doing.

You are on the right track

You'll get the hang of it my friend, I had the same problems with the same things but after asking here or reading the posts and a few wrong installs  I think I might have cracked it, but there is always help here, so don't be afraid to ask, I've been on RailWorks for a month now and thourghly enjoy it,

Ok, i hope the OP won't mind me hijacking his thread, but i'am having problems trying to install a freeware route (first attempt) that requires a lot of third party assets. i think i understand the above, unzip rpk files to rwp files and use the railworks package manager to install them, and copy and paste some files as per the instructions. But where i'am confused what to do is with assets that don't have a readme file or a rpk file. They normally go something like this assets/'name'/scenery/buildings/textures and then a lot of bin,txg etc. files and i don't know what to do.

Also, when the package manager installs the add-ons is there a need to organise the files in to the one route file or something similar.

Sorry if the questions are easily answered, but this is my first attempt at installing a freeware route and i'am not that well up on computers either. Thanks in advance if anyone can be of any help.

Hi

The usual format for any files that are uploaded to the UKTS library is that there is a main .zip file inside which there is a Readme File, an Image file (to identify the asset) and a data file which for RailWorks would be a .rpk file or a .rwp file.

You would normally open up the .zip folder and extract the Readme and Data file to somewhere where you can get to them easily. I place everything on the Desktop to reduce searching through folders,

Note that a .rpk file is the format used for Rail Simulator. It probably means that the asset was created originally for Rail Simulator but do not worry about this as the RailWorks package manager will install this without any problem. The other format is the .rwp file which is the native RailWorks file which is again installed using the Package Manager.

Note that the .rpk and .rwp formats are just fancy .zip files. If you open them with an advanced unzipper (I use the free 7-zip) you will see that the file contains the hierarchy of folders that you find in the RailWorks/Assets folder and if you keep drilling down you will find the asset you are loading. You can actually simply copy the relevant files and paste them in the appropriate RailWorks folders if you want to.

This is just for information though and it is always best to install and un-install assets using the Package Manager as this will keep a record of the assets you have installed and also ensure that new assets go to the correct places.

You do not have to do any manual re-organising of folders, if fact you should not try it otherwise you will change the paths to assets and routes will not be able to find the assets they require.

As for Library files without Readme files .. well that is not standard procedure and uploaders should at least provide basic instructions for users.

I also note your point about having to place files manually following a path. I am not sure why this is as you can usually package up anything into a .rwp file but where this happens you have to follow the path given through the file structure and place the file where indicated.

Thanks for quick reply, as far as i can figure out when i unzipped said files they either automatically found there way to the railworks folder or they were their all along :-? .
Managed to get the route to load and drive on it, but with a lot of stuff, including bridges and platforms, missing. Heading in the right direction though :D .

Hi

Many people use an extremely useful utility called RW Tools which can be obtained from here -

http://www.rstools.info/rw_tools.html

It is donationware but you can try it 21 times before having to obtain a licence. This program has many useful features, some of which are quite specialised, but it can tell you which assets are missing from a route and where to look for them.

I would add that you will need to read the manual that comes with RW Tools otherwise you will probably not work out what to do.

Hi cilldroichid

...and welcome to this forum.

Do you know how to navigate to the RW Assets folder? For the downloads that have no .rwp or .rpk file, when you unzip to a temporary location, you will normally see the 'assets' folder for manual installation. You can unzip direct into the Railworks folder but I prefer to 'copy/paste' into the correct Assets folder most of the time. Under the Assets folder you will find a.o. the RailVehicles folder which contains separate folders for each creator of the asset.

Just take a look to become familiar with how the RW Asset folder is set up, that is in case you don't already know :)

The path (correct me guys if I am mistaken, I am not at my home computer): C:/ Program files/Steam/Steamapps/common/Railworks/assets....

Make sure you do not change anything though, other wise you may need a "verify cache" action under the Steam window.

Good luck and happy driving, and come back to this forum when you have further questions.

Thanks for the replies everyone, downloaded the rw tools, now to figure out how to use it :D . I think i'm getting there with the copy and pasting of the files without the .rwp or .rpk file. Got the platforms and some of the bridges up last night along with, i think most of the scenery and whatnot. I'm probably missing some downloads or didn't install something myself.

Just a quick question about the "verify cache" with steam, if i ever have to "verify cache" will that affect any of the non-steam add-ons,ie. will steam threat them as foreign objects to the game and get rid of them, or somethig similar.

Thanks again.

Hi

The Verify Game Cache will only check and repair default files that form part of the basic program and any DLC that you have bought from Steam. Anything you have obtained from elsewhere will not be touched, nor will any content you have created yourself such as Scenarios or models.

The easiest way to do this is by using 7Zip in 2 panels mode. You open the archive in one pane, navigate to your Railworks folder in the other, and drag the contents of the archive to the correct place in Railworks - simple.

You can download 7Zip from http://www.7-zip.org/ - 2 panels mode is on the View menu.
