Hard Drive Accessing
Hard Drive accessing during a scennario slows the game to a stutter, especially on a route such as WCML north.Would more RAM cure this I have 2 gig at the moment, would an extra 2 make much difference. When the sim is not accessing the hard drive the graphics are very smooth,so the processor and video card can cope with the graphics.

Re: Hard Drive Accessing
It depends on your OS, if you've got Windows XP 32 bit, you can only get a max 3.5 GB anyway, but, if you have Windows 7 or Vista, ( I don't personally ) 32 or 64 bit, then you can increase it immensely, so I've heard, some folks are running 8GB RAM.

Re: Hard Drive Accessing
Just to correct that statement - under any 32 bit o/s (either XP or Windows 7), you can access a maximum of 3.2 Gb of memory. With a 64 bit o/s, you can access all the memory in the PC, assuming you do not have more than 16 Gb of memory ...
Whether or not adding 2 Gb of extra memory will make much difference depends largely on what the specifications of the rest of the PC are,

Re: Hard Drive Accessing
For what it's worth I'm using Win7 64-bit with 4GB RAM and I get stutters when the game accesses the disk to load more data. I think the stutters may be slightly less pronounced than when I used WinXP 32-bit on this PC but whether that's down to the OS being able to use a bit more memory now or just the difference between WinXP and Win7 I wouldn't like to say. I did increase RAM from 2GB to 4GB but I think that may have been before RW came out when I was using the basically similar RailSimulator, but in any case I can't remember whether that increase decreased stuttering or not.
If you search this forum you'll see plenty of posts from users seeking the stutter free holy grail but I don't remember reading any from those who've really found it! In any case one user's 'unacceptable stuttering' is another's 'runs pretty smooth here'.

Re: Hard Drive Accessing
I run RW off a SSD ( and have 6GB ram ) and even then it stutters. There's a few threads around about stuttering and possible causes, I too don't think anyone's found the grail yet. I guess if you loaded the entire game onto a ramdisk it would work, but I'd need an extra 28GB of system ram...
My posts are my opinion, and should be read as such.
Re: Hard Drive Accessing
Just to add a quick 2p. I've recently gone from 2Gb to 4Gb running XP 32-bit. I've not noticed any real difference when driving but it has made route building a much quicker process, especially when putting in lofted scenery.

Yes, there's something fundamental about loading scenery that makes it insert noticeable pauses in one's progress - especially on the more densely populated routes. You can see it on the "Relief Mail" video I posted recently, and I'm running quite a fast machine.
The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.
