Railworks - Syncing

Post by andrewscott »

In steam my railworks has been syncing for what must be about half an hour now, and i want to play the game!

What exactly is it doing when it is "syncing"?

Sorry, couldn't resist. When you say 'sinking' (sorry, syncing) do you mean that the Steam front page is telling you that it is updating Railworks?

Click where it says "Downloads" along the top - that should bring up a screen that tells you if you have anything pending that might need unpausing

Unfortunatly it doesnt appear that i have anything, nothing listed and no transfer speeds, no total downloaded - i have an option to resume all though, however, clicking it does nothing!

Edit: I have just tried to exit Steam but i get the message

"Steam is currently syncing your game files with the steam cloud" (whatever that is!)

I had this this morning too, i had to leave my PC on while i went to work because it hadn't finnished!

It is used to save your settings and save files.

Steam cloud is mostly used on other steam games like Half Life series, TF2, Just cause 2. To save game settings and your game saves so you don't need to restart after installing or going through all the options.

I guess it's used on Railworks for the Career scenorieos. Leave enbaled as very handy. if it stalls exit steam and restart it.

But for those of us who can't be bothered with the "Career" stuff, I think the Steam Cloud Syncing is a useless feature, and since it being implemented has occasionally prevented my RailWorks from launching.. it would just sit there for minutes on the "Preparing to launch RailWorks" box and not do anything else.. so had to Cancel and re-try a few times before it would finally launch. :-?

As I don't play many games that bother using Steam-Cloud stuff and seeing as I'm not into the "Career" stuff yet for RailWorks, I just noticed that the option can be turned off if one doesn't want to use it for a particular game (in this case for me, RailWorks); From the Steam-Client go your your Library, right-click on RailWorks, select Properties, Updates then un-check the "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for RailWorks" option. And hopefully the will prevent the problems of RailWorks hanging on launch as it tries to connect to the Steam-Cloud but nothing happens.

I've had that on more than one Steam game, despite of using the cloud or not. What helps is to stop all downloads manually in the tab and then quit and reopen Steam. Start your downloads again and it should work.
If you aren't playing the career scenarios, you can also turn off the cloud feature: right click on RW, select properties and uncheck it in the updates tab.
