Rolling Stock Abbreviations, What do they mean?
Hi all, would it be possible for someone to make a list of the abbreviations used for different wagons and what they mean? I think this would be very useful for beginners. I.E: TTA tanks carry liquid, but what does TTA stand for? What does HHA, TPO and BG stand for? , etc.
Regards
Dave

Hi Michael, thanks for those useful links. They cover coaches and vans well, but there is no mention, that I can find, of HHA, TTA wagons etc, the coal wagons, liquid wagons etc.
I would greatly appreciate anyone's help with this also.

First letter: H = hopper, T = tank.
Third letter: A = air brake.
"The second letter gave more detailed indication of the design or use of the stock in question, and was different for each series."

Thanks again Michael, it's a little clearer, but does that mean a HHA wagon is Hopper Hopper Airbrake? I thought it was something like Heavy Haul Airbrake. I don't know..

Re: Rolling Stock Abbreviations, What do they mean?
For coaches there always used to be a method: F first class, S second class, T third class, C composite (first/second, etc), B brake coach, G gangwayed (i.e. side corridor with gangways at the ends), O open seating with central aisle, etc.
On the Southern though the electric units seemed to have a description for the unit type which was made up as they went along! SUB suburban unit non corridor, BIL for two coach corridor with one lavatory but no gangway between coaches. HAL once coach non corridor, one side-corridor with lavatory. etc etc!
I have no idea about modern wagons, but HG was a High Goods generally five planks high, LG low goods 1 plank high, etc.
An interesting subject, but I don't know of any books we could go to for reference though. I'm relying on memory, which can be a bit oops at times!
regards Ted.

Another good resource is:
http://electriclemon.net/mysharedaccoun ... codes.html
which is part of the Solihull Model Railway Circle website. Found this when I was going through making sure all my MSTS wagons had consistent names.
Also if you never got the old fashioned headcodes "1K09" for example or the correct patterns for the lights on steam engines, then the 2D53 - Mainlines of North Wales website has a great explanation:

Re: Rolling Stock Abbreviations, What do they mean?
Thanks everyone, so H is for Hopper obviously, and the last letter is for brake type, so coal hoppers, HAAs are: Hopper with air brakes, I'm guessing the middle A is for Aggregates, but what is the T for in HTA, etc, or am I being thick?

Re: Rolling Stock Abbreviations, What do they mean?
Dave,
The second letter doesn't necessarily indicate the use of the wagon, it indicates the wagon type, or variant if you like. In this case the HAA was the first design of the once numerous 2-axle Merry Go Round (MGR) coal hopper wagon. An HTA is a bogie coal hopper wagon operated by DB Schenker.
