Asset and Blue print editors

Could someone advise me how you use these and if they are the place to edit details such as cab view positions etc. In MSTS you just opened in notepad but RS is clearly different.
At present if I open say asset editor I get 2 screens - the blueprint editor reference Installed routes and source files - but I can't get anything to show in any of these so there are no files to play with.
Do I need other progams?
Is this the place to edit all these BIN files?
any good sources of help in this area
All thoughts appreciated

The blueprint editor can only edit files in .xml format located in the Source folder structure. The source files aren't provided for the default content so that's why you're not seeing anything. The editors are provided to help in the creation of routes and rolling stock not modifying existing material.
If you want to modify the performance of a loco for instance, you will need to 'open' its xxxxSimulation.bin file with serz.exe which you should find in the Railworks folder. That will create an editable .xml file which once you're finished editing can be turned back into a .bin file by 'opening' it with serz.exe
If you've not yet had a look the RailWorks wiki (
http://www.railsimdownloads.com/wiki/tiki-index.php) will give you some guidance on the Source / Asset file structure as well as what parameters do what in the simulation files.

P.S. Back up any files you edit as the Steam update / cache verfication process will revert your edited default content files back to their original state. It goes without saying that you should also back up the originals before you edit them in case of unintended consequences!

If you wish to edit the locomotive/wagon's .bin files, it is much easier/quicker to download RW_Tools from the file library. You can link .bin files in the RailWorks folder to RW_Tools so that when you click on the filename in Windows Explorer they open automatically so that you can edit/save them just as if they were in a normal text editor.
RW_Tools has many options for working with RW files and will save you a lot of time, especially as you seem to be familiar with editing MSTS files.

Possibly but there's no harm in knowing how to do it the old fashioned, and free, way!

Thanks to you both - assuming standard xml files I might try this first but also used route writer before and found aspects of it great also.
As with all railsims the fun lies in trying to do things rather than actually doing them I think!!!!
