Pitot tube maybe (similar to aircraft)? If so, I'd be surprised if it worked (was accurate) at such relatively low speeds. Must be some kind of pressure differential concept...

Thanks for the pics Glen, diffinately 59 tube stock controllers. Well i have something to get started with now.
I've just joined District Dave's forum, do you think it's worth putting a post there.

I have asked someone who knows about these things and have been told that the speedo was operated by an impeller mounted on an axle. It was only reckoned to be accurate to within +/- 10 % though!

As to asking for info on District Dave's forum, it would certainly be worth asking. I'll also keep trying to find some info for you.
