Hi Matt
Sometimes its better to go or a slower but more stable line speed.
I believe its all to do with SNR and attenuation levels.
But didn't you post near 10Mb download speeds in your earlier post?
Looking at the tracert I did earlier there are an extra 8 hops to the UKTS server all over 100m/s longer than to Bernard's site....I should imagine this would explain the slower speeds?
Cheers

It also depends on the quality of the wire used with ADSL.

I've had a completely new line fitted a few days ago and am getting ADSL installed on Thursday. :)

Hi
After 0100hrs...and my line speed is back to over 700kb/s.
Checking again there's does seem to be a difference in the style of server?.

Benards site single file 680 or two files about 350 each.

UKTS site single file 340 or four files at about 200 each.

So technically I was getting higher width from UKTS, just not available on a single file it would seem.
Which I assume Matt was trying to explain earlier, about using a download manager.

Cheers
Jon

I have a 24mb ADSL and a 10mb NTL cable, I was a beta triallist for the 24mb connection and i've just not got around to telling them to get rid of it yet since it is a load of old poop. FWIW before that I had regular old fashioned 512k ADSL and that became just as unreliable too, only working for a couple of hours a day at most and not at all if it rained. Having a 24mb connection *should* be at least a better low speed connection, depends what it can train up on (similar to a modem) - just because it's 24mb doesn't mean that's what it will actually get a connection at, again just like a 56k modem rarely got 56k connections. But, if you look at the quality graphs, you'll see it's better across the board for a 24mb line than an original RADSL style line - just only very marginally so at the bottom end.

I've just tried downloading Xtracks at an average download speed of 11KBs from here, 119KBs from Okrasa's site!

Hi Ian
Your lucky....I just got 7.65kb/s from UKTS.
....but 150 kb/s from Bernards site.
Mind you the net is very sticky for me tonight.

Jon / Ian,

Can you give me your current IP addresses? (if you don't know, then do a tracert to http://www.uktrainsim.com and I'll get it from there) - these need to be your *public* addresses, if you're behind a router you might well have a 192.168 address which will be no use).

I will run traces via the host control panel and see if it's just that they are being routed via a bad route.

I've just noticed that the forum is running at about the same speed, according to Opera!

ok i've raised a support ticket with the provider, we'll see if they have any recommendations.

Certainly using their diagnostics it would appear there is a better route however I may not be reading it correctly and in any case it may not make any difference - so i've reported it to them and we'll see what they say.

Hi there,

I have just tried downloading "X" tracks new version. I was getting a mere 12.5kps which is very poor.

I usually manage 220kps approx

In all complaints, i need an ISP and a tracert to pass on to the host to help them in their tracing.

How to do a trace earlier in this thread.

Thanks
Matt.

Just tested on my office ADSL at work (Zen Internet) and got 64kb/s (it's 1 mb line but often it doesn't work so great, probably other stuff on the network or other users hitting our site - either that or Zen stuffed our connection back to 512k which wouldn't surprise me, they aren't the best!).

So it seems ok from Zen. Anyone having any problems - let me know what your ISP is and do a TraceRoute so I can see the route it's taking and what your addressing info is, i'll need to pass it all on to my host to help their diagnosis.

Looks from that traceroute like there's something going on in the Verio network, hopefully it won't last too long - look between hop 17 and 18, it jumps from 130ms to 360ms.

How are downloads Laurie?
