Tonight (Saturday 23rd September) - Free Access...

Post by NeutronIC »

I'm going to open the doors for a couple of hours tonight, totally free access to the entire file library.

Please pass the message around as far and wide to as many people as possible.

The goal: Hit the server as hard as you possibly can, access the forums, download lots of files, browse the site.

It'll probably start 9 or 10pm tonight, i'll update this topic with precise info when I have it.

I'll be monitoring the server closely, I want to see how well the server operates and ensure that previous issues with the new servers are now definitely behind us.

Damn - just saw this AFTER spending an age re-downloading a load of files to reinstall after a crash...

If I'd known I could have gone to sleep this afternoon instead.....

Matt - does that mean no queuing for the non premium people and if so, will the bandwidth for them still be throttled back to 2Kbs ?

For the couple of hours during the test period, all the blocks will be off - no queues, no speed limits, effectively it's a couple of hours free premium for everyone in return for testing the system to let me see how it behaves, if it still has a problem I need to feed that back to the ISP quickly or they'll close the ticket and i'll have to start all over again.

All those routes I've been debating whether to download...
All those engines I wish I could justify the hard drive space....
All those files I could download whether I want them or not...

Wonder how much I can get down on a 2MB connection in two hours...
Wonder if I can stay awake that long?

What do you reckon, guys - concerted effort and go for it?

ive already sorted a selection of 15 - 35mb files to download and have two pc's set up ready to go. I dont want anything but i like the idea of a stress test, so anything i can do to help.

I reckon i can get 4 x 35mb downloads going at once :)

It's now live. Hit it as hard as you can for as long as you can, keep the downloads going.

Download managers should work 100% (though i've not tested it) for non-premium users.

Service to premium users should be identical.

Pull as much as you can and don't forget also browse the site itself, it's not just raw bandwidth but also causing hits on to the server that matter, they both contribute to the load.

Forums a bit sluggish - 4 or 5 seconds load times. Downloads zinging along on my 4 meg cable connection.

Also got the works 2 meg ADSL connection running flat out as well on downloading.

Remember if you're filling up your connection then the bottleneck for slow page loads might be you :)

I've got about 10 gig of files queued up for download now i think, so that'll keep things busy with at least 10mb. Forum pages loading up nicely though.
