I've had one two or three times now that looks semi official and warns that my computer my be infected with spyware and do I want to check now?
I've read that some of these things are spyware themselves and by clicking yes, spyware is installed.
It does say 'advertisment' in the bottom right hand corner but in smaller, almost transparent writing.
Incidentally, if you do get a problem with viruses, spyware, trojans etc., I cannot recommend too highly the 'Reader Helps Reader' forums on the Web User magazine site.
pop ups again!

My rule of thumb is - if it pops up unrequested, don't click it. Generally these messages are never helpful, and clicking does more harm then good. They aim to suck in 'newbies' who think the message is real, hence many adverts popup in fake IE windows.

Yes, all true, however Burst are a reputable advert agency and if they ever have any banners that trick users in to clicking them when they think they are closing them then they will want to know about it so they can remove them from their portfolio, with the reputation that advertising has on the internet the last thing they need is to be promoting such things.
I've clicked the close button on the sport betting ad several times now and it does exactly what it says on the tin.
Matt.
