Permission Problems

Post by phat2003uk »

I was wondering what happens if you can't get in touch with someone for permission to upload ? I can't seem to get in touch with Bruce Bryant, is there a policy that if the person doesn't reaply for 2 weeks, can you upload without permission ?

my guess would be No. No reply is usually accepted as being a no to your request.

If it was a PM they might not use the forums though or might have just gone away from train sim. I'd try and contact an email address if you havn't already and I personally (Although most people including myself agree that I usually talk rubish) would wait for about 3-4 weeks then if you havn't got a reply at all would upload it anyway but also email him telling what you've done.

This is a problem, especially on older files as the author may have changed e-mail address and there doesn't seem to be an e-mail forwarding system, besides, who would want to give away a new address to a potential spammer.

I would suggest trying the steps already suggested and the post a Does anybody know????? message on the forum.

I sometimes go to places where even the bush telegraph is unreliable let alone e-mail, however it would be preumptive to assume that I was no longer around.

The idea you wait for a response and after a period of time if you don't get one you assume permission to upload is wrong.

You are copying someone elses work unless you have explicit perimission you can't upload.

If someone is thinking along the lines of "I don't want to waste the work I have put in" my answer is Ask before you start not when you have finished.

To be clear form my own point of view I expect to be asked perimission to use one of my models for a repaint etc (I normally reply) but if I for some reason do not give a reply the default answer is, no. The requester in this circumstance does not have permission to upload.

Totally agree with that statement. The presumption of going ahead if you haven't had a definitive response is definitely wrong, apart from being totally disrespectful - and is a typical example of the way people think today... :-? [/i]

On sort of similar lines, when you upload an activity should you check with the route builder and all creators of the stock used. I would have though yes, but it is always something I have never been too clear on.

As long as you list the files you have used - in a readme or using the related file link - you dont need to specifically ask permission to use rolling stock / motive power since the person downloading the activity will have to download the stock too - unless they already have it. What you MUST always do is ask permission if you need to amend any of the files, such as the eng or wag file to make it work with your activity.

I always ask permission of the route or activity authors too if ive made use of their paths. Sometimes its easier to reuse paths already supplied, but if you do you should always ask permission to re use them and remember not to change them at all.

The answer to that is no you don't have to have permission because all you are uploading are the .act, .srv. .trf .con and path files which tells MSTS which route, locos etc are needed to run the activity.

I have been waiting for about 2 weeks for a reply to an email asking permission to upload a re-skin.

If the author of the model doesn't wish for a re-skin to be uploaded, that's fair enough.

I would hope that people would have the common courtesy to respond though, even if it's just to say no.

They might not be on that email address, might be busy with other things, might be on holiday - all sorts of perfectly positive reasons why you might not get a response :)

It could also have been forgotten or lost in the mix so try a PM or try re-sending the email (just don't do it too frequently :) ).

This may sound I'm being funny but believe me I'm not. Check you spelt their name correctly and said please in yor request? That's something I was taught at school quite early on!

I'm sure most do but it does happen where those little important things are forgotten and may make the difference whether or not you get a reply.

I just thought I'd add something -

The re-skin I have been working on has a couple of 'work in progress' screenshots over on the rolling stock creation forum, and on the first post, added that I havent got a reply yet, but publicly state this, and that I agree to remove the screenshots if required.

The response I've had seems to be 'Its no problem to upload screenshots, but you are correct not to upload, as there has been no response to your email'
