Forums very slow?

Post by Fodda »

For the last month or so I've noticed that the forums in particular, but UKTS in general has been slowing down considerably. Here at work, I can blame it on other network traffic... But at home I've had the broadband speed increased and the problem is just the same.

For instance, when opening a 15 post forum page, I can usually read every post on that page before the final graphics have appeared. And on the forum Index page, the little indicators of unread or read posts is usually the last to appear, which means a long wait to see if there are any new posts.

Is it just my luck to have a slow connection or has anyone else noticed this?

For instance... After posting the above, I waited for every page to show 'Done' before posting this. Out, confirm, reopen thread, post reply etc... and I reckon it's taken about 5 mins. On broadband, with other sites loading in seconds...

Hmmm... And it appears that the graphics are all being downloaded rather than coming from my IE cache. (IE6 by the way).

The caching on the site has never been spectacular. Not sure why it's going slow for you - it seems fine for me here at work and home. There are definitely some improvements to be made though on things like caching.

Ive not noticed any particular problems, other than posting replies which sometimes results in my getting server not found errors. Speed seems ok. :)

The help for beginners forum has always been a total dog for some unknown reason, I can't see anything different about that forum to any other.

I'll try and spend some time tonight looking at the database indexing to see if maybe it's just being very inefficient, certainly the machines are next to idle and there is ooooooodles of bandwidth so that's not the limiting factor - which tends to suggest it's something like database locking or indexing etc.

Thanks. It's not so bad that it's unuseable, but when I press the Reply button, by the time I can start typing, I've generally forgotten what I wanted to say. ;)

Poor old Fodda :-(

I can't say I've noticed any real slowdown at all. Occasionally, as with almost every site I've visited, there's a second or two hangup as the page loads, but I attribute that simply to traffic. I've certainly never experienced the sort of delay that Fodda has seen. Mind you, it may be that I access this site at a different time of day and experience less traffic...

If you are using subsilver it's at the bottom - it's unfortunately not yet available on black soul.
