GetRight and the new download system

Post by bravedan »

OK the good news........ on a program I have used for two years now.........so am well used to............GetRight.

Mostly it downloads files through the new UKTS system OK in that they are complete, and the rate is good..

BUT

Sometimes, even when a download using it is in progress, proving it's active, it refuses to kick in for a second or more download, and normal non-managed downloading to the Temp folder kicks in. This happens even if I use the right click menu on the download arrow to supposedly force download via GetRight.

Also sometimes when (say) three downloads are pending, one will stall for no reason, eventually saying server busy............but while this is going on other connections are being made and files are being downloaded.

MOST DEFINITELY was not doing ANY of this before the changes............

SORRY MATT!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave and Matt,

I'm having the same experience with GetRight but it only started happening today (NZ time). Everything went okay yesterday.

Regards,

Bob.

I am not able to download anything this evening with GetRight. The new "confirmation" window will not display.

(in fact I should say "with or without GetRight").

Dont worry chaps, I dont think any one is getting anything at all tonight. It looks like the server has thrown a wobbly.

I'm abandoning the new server tonight, going back to how it was and rethinking, this has already knackered my Christmas staying up until 4am three days in a row trying to fix this.

I'm gutted that with todays paranoia (justified or not) people have so many applications installed that they have no idea how to configure or applications that do things they don't clearly advertise and clearly offer abilities to fine tune or disable that one of the most basic protocols on the Internet (which was around a LONG time before the web) is now basically useless for the average user.

Hi
Maybe I'm being lucky...but that would be unusual..but I'm using getright and all the downloads are working fine...done around 12 today. :D
Having said that I'm using an old version of getright 3.3.4.
Just a note on the original post...am I right in thinking you can only get 2 files at once on the new server...reguardless of membership status :-?

I've reverted back to the original server and in many cases people find they can only do two at once - it's not a programmed limitation on the server though, no :)

I just stepped up security on my computer.

I got a virus. Instantly detected and quarantined by My virus protection. But still it managed to get onto the computer...

Upon doing this I found that UKTS wouldn't load correctly.

( I installed Zopne Alarm Pro Full version)

I then sat down and worked out all my setting so I could allow UKTS and nothing else. ( A case of set up the propgram I'm using to allow only what I want, technical usage of a program you have) :)

Ps I also stopped all file transfers to and from my computer upon Virus Detection. Source was unknown. But all People I have recieved a file off today got a simple text message requesting them to goto http://www.grisoft.co.uk or http://www.grisoft.com and download AVG V6 (Free Virus scanner) and update the Virus database then Scan their entire computer just to be safe.

I know this Virus infection only got onto my computer within at most 1/2 of being detected but For me that was no where near fast enough. Two files infected in that time.. Both Healed upon completion of the virus scan and heal.

The need for knowing how to set-up your Firewall and Adware Programs is essential, If you have them set-up wrong you could still let the Viruses through but not the Essential Downoad info like UKTS's downloads...

ooh I think I rambled  Sorry. Just a little bit of information for you all. (Useless bit it still information)

Hi Matt,

Getright downloading seems fully back on now, but need more files I need, if you see what I mean........ .

I know you have reverted, but just for info, I found out while on the "new" download system it was also it seems trying to download multiple copies of a file, no indication that it was...........so it was leaving "failed/incomplete download" getright files after it had downloaded an identically named file............

Again, this was happening only from UKTS during this period. Other sites were downloading single correct files at the same time frame.

:bad-words: computers.....................!

Matt

I am sorry you've had to revert - the new system was so much better and being able to use an FTP client to browse the download library was much quicker than using the website.

I'm sure there must be a way to get it to work

I'm not sure there is Alan, the problem is not just on the software - though there are a few issues there, they are all solveable with enough time and effort - but some of the issues are (and I don't mean this in any way of a derogatory fashion!) on the user side and there's just nothing I can do about that, my support load went sky high, about a dozen users (that I know of) just couldn't get it to work on their set up and were therefore shut off from downloading at all and so forth.

It's just not viable unfortunately.

Maybe if we can get those users to join in on the testing of future Ideas and Developments then we will have a better testing to show the possible user errors and Incompatabilities. :(

I liked the FTP system, if not only for the speed of it but also the ukts_#ID_$Filename.$ext format of the Download files. :)

Matt,

I'm sorry the new system didn't work.

I appreciate your efforts, I really do.

However, I'm not sure that "paranoia" is the appropriate term. Some of us have a reasonable level of familiarity with computer things, even if we're not "experts". If we can't manage to make the thing work for us, just imagine how many novices will have even bigger problems.

Keep up the fantastic work and if there's anything I can do to help, such as testing, as suggested by alan2, please let me know.

Regards,

Bob.
