An Idea for Newbies

Post by pmcausey »

Matt,

I just had a thought. If this forum software could support "stickies", why not a sticky listing the names and file id's of the most commonly "requested" files (X-Tracks, Route Riter, Con Builder, the clear track monitor utility, etc.) to be put as the first post in the newbies forum.

I'm planning an article which lists the must-have downloads like drvr aids, ukfs, xtracks and so forth and then describe in more detail all the things that are available so that a newbie can get right on and see some stuff on their PC without wading through what is now a rather massive file library! :)

Matt.

Great idea Philip.

Just a suggestion, but these "utility files" and mods like cam hacks, weather/enironment files did not all originate here. Can we upload them without the creators permission? I have many of them sitting on my hard disk or burned onto CD's.

All that I'm thinking of here is stuff that's been made freely available on Train-Sim.com and other "free" download sites.

Obviously it's not too difficult to redirect folk to sites with a few downloads but "Train Sim.coms" file library is equally huge and less organised than UKTS's and some sites which had excellent (even today) work available have just dissappeared.

Also cautionary notes where some utilities may have adverse effects on some routes.

I learned alot about MSTS by having to sort out problems that duff or conflicting installs caused.

Train-Sim.com file library seems more bigger than UKTS's one. Maybe because more people upload there because more people download there. Like for example, the NSE HAP and CAP, even though most users that vists train-sim.com are Americans, it still has a lot more downloads compared to UKTS. Look at the figure now, 375 and 381 for HAP and CAP respectively at t-s.com but only 172 and 144 respectively for UKTS! :o And yes it seems less organised but still has a search page!
