That is a separate known issue. Matt is aware of that one but has not fixed it so far.

Seems to have sorted itself to an extent now that the files have been split across rows a little bit more.

Previously there was a need to scroll at 1920 * 1080 which has now gone.

Yes it will be Stephen until the files with the long names drop off the screen following the release of new downloads. This is not the first time this has happened and doubtless will not be the last due to the way the page is rendered.

Personally (not as a moderator) I would enforce all uploads to use the old MS Dos syntax of 8 characters and a 3 character file extension like .zip etc. No spaces to catch out the unwary etc. We might not get many uploads if that was the rule though.
Kindest regards

Good afternoon John
Thanks for clearing the matter up
At least I know the reason and that eventually it will correct itself

I don't think there are any plans to "fix" it since it is not really broken.

The sure way to stop the problem is restrict the length of filenames but in the past restrictions placed on creators have lead to grumbling and people contemplating not uploading. Alternatively, the number of files across the screen could be reduced but then that would mean less time on the front pages for many files.

I know Matt has been in and out of the forums but I also know some of the other things he has been up to outside of UKTS and for Raildirector.

When I next speak to him I will mention it but I do not call him every day.

Why not simply add something to the upload page, asking people to refrain from using an underscore in place of a space?

Whilst the 'wide-screen effect' is a minor annoyance, it is an annoyance all the same.

Cheers

It's not the name of the file that is causing the problem, it's the title of the upload.
It could be easily fixed by editing by the uploader without needing to change the file and it would not required re-approval.

Indeed - an upload entitled
"(1L40) Salisbury to London Waterloo" for example displays all on 1 line on my 1920*1080 desktop at home; but if I view it on a 1280*1024 screen it correctly wraps the text due to the spacing.

Would it be possible for the site to parse _ on the title field to replace them with a space? It matters not a jot what the actual filename is called - it is just the title field that is affected.

Should be fixed now. Max 20 chars will be displayed on the front page. If the title has to be clipped then it will have a "..." added to the end to make it obvious.
