I was a bit disheartened today, I thought I'd nutted out how it all rotated.......but I'd overlooked an error of interpretation, which I finally sussed this evening and found the solution - in theory.....so animation commences tomorrow.

I read, somewhere yesterday, that the joy motion on the original L&B Manning's had a large error in it, that would have had a negative impact on it's performance. The Ffestiniog replica, Lyn, has had this error corrected.

With the former mystery of the Joy(less) motion solved....here's a new one, the colour of the headlamp: white or deep red?

Looking at black and white photos from both L&B and Southern days, the lamps are certainly not white. They might be black, or green to match the loco, it was the practice of some railways to assign a set of lamps to an engine, and have its number painted on them; the compound at York has a set of crimson lake lamps.

From what I've been told, Lyn's lamp was red and I presume the manning's lamps would have been similar.



To be honest, the red colour should probably be a bit brighter then I have done it. I have weathered and toned it down a bit, to stop it looking too gaudy and overpowering.

Headlamps were black in Independent days and dark (cherry/indian?) red in Southern Days with a clear lens.

Tail lamps were smaller and had a red bullseyeand may well have been the same colour or black - certainly not white

Lyn's headlamp was slightly different to the three original MWs and Kevin has modelled it very accurately.

Lews headlamp was smaller than all the others and appears to have been similar to an LMS lamp of the period and not too dissimilar in design to that currently carried by Lyd which purists may argue is the wrong colour being white - but as it is the FR's loco they can of course do what they wish!

Yes, Kevin, I think the crimson would be right, because the hue (?) matches the light compared with the buffer in a b&w photo, but it also matches the green panels on the side tanks. I would be inclined to think the crimson based on the lamps at the museum.

As to weathering.....hmmmm, I think the lamps would have been maintained in good condition, such as cleaning, etc. As far as how they'd appear in the sim might depend on the shader used? Sort of semi-gloss?

With the colour, I'm more thinking of the action of weather and enviroment on the colour, rather then just the dirt. Some colours can also look a bit over bright in railworks and find that desaturating them helps to improve realism. My latest textures are look almost B&W when compared to my first models

You're right there, Kevin, it's the end result in the sim that counts and we don't know until the model is converted to work in RW.
