What did you do today?

As part of my updating the
Mortocombe Railway website, I have been messing about with YouTube. So today at the Mortocombe Railway I took some video of various bits and pieces. The link I have given here is of me oiling round “Meconopsis” while raising steam before the days work.
I thought it would make a change to see something “real” of mine and not something “virtual”!!!

That's rather a nice toy
Today, I have made an extremely crude temporary spark arrestor for my 5" gauge Butch:
and started a CAD drawing of David Lloyd George's tanks:
I'm plotting a live steam SM32 scale version of DLG with a mate.

Hey Portbury,
I'm sorry if this is a downer but I would of thought the holes in that spark arrestor are to big, the Char would just go straight through them.
Are you plannign on using DJB casting on your fairlie?

Ooh, sounds exciting! Please post some photos of it on here when it's finished
I didn't do anything railway-related today, just went to Maidenhead to see The Simpsons Movie. I did have a gala on my garden railway last Friday however - see my site at

The gauze should be ok, it's sold specifically for model engineering size spark arrestors by Polly Model Engineering, so I'm hopeful

. The idea is to stop the bigger particles of burning coal getting through, smaller particles should have burnt themselves out before they land. You can't stop the smallest particles without vv fine gauze, which blocks up almost instantly.

Probably not, the castings are no longer listed on the DJB site anyway. We did buy the DJB laser cut bogie frame blanks a few years ago, luckily

.

Cheers! Don't hold your breath though

. I've got to finish designing the thing and my mate has got to finish building his 5" gauge Butch first.....

From the pic, it looks like the same grade used in the 12inch to the foot scale locos on the W&L, which I can assure you means it will block up marvelously, as I have lit up, and then spent the rest of the time on shed constantly clearing the spark arrestor.

Spent from 12:00 till 6:30 in steam today, no blockages of the gauze thankfully. Did a spark arrestor test at the end of the day (an excuse to try full regulator for a bit

). The fire ended up in the smokebox, but the loco still made steam amazingly! Not quite as well as usual though.

The left hand side of the smokebox shows the height the char got to, the stuff on the right fell out when I opened the door.
That's impressively fine gauze to use in a full size loco, the blockages sound a nightmare.
