Many thanks for the explanation Jontan. It was the Luttermoller system I was thinking of (I've often visited the site you give the ref. for). I notice that it has something in common with Heywood / Klien-Lindner system: the driving gear wheel is driven from a pin fixed in the ball on the fixed axle. K-L has this feature on the swivelling axles.
On the preserved railway in Wales where I am a volunteer we will soon have a working Rumanian 'Resita' 0-8-0T with K-L articulation. Having seen the underneath of another 'Resita', I don't envy the driver oiling up in the morning!
