Ffestiniog Route Building....

Post by batroost »

Hi folks,

As Kevin mentioned on another thread he's been helping me (a lot!) with a build of the Ffestiniog. It's going well (I think?) but there's still lots to do. To start with we're working on Coed-y-Bleddiau (above Tan-y-Bwlch) down to Porthmadog - there's too much to do in one go. But I'm sure we'll be able to extend 'Back to Blaenau' in due course!

Some screenshots to give you an idea of where we've got to - the most interesting thing in the pictures is Kevin's rolling stock of course!

The bit that's closest to being finished!

Kevin's supplying the terrain objects - like Cei Mawr in the background here - I'm not a 3D modeller!

These two best illustrate how much more there is to do i.e. the track is (mainly) laid but the landscape is (mostly) still bare. It's bing built to 2x scale - using Kevins 2x scale rolling stock as the vast majority of the track is Dynamic. Still some compromises required - one less siding at port as I have no curved points (still plenty to play with), and the roads will be 'impressionistic'...

I'm off on holiday for a fortnight (staying in Porthmadog!), but aim to get some solid work done afterwards. We WILL get there (eventually).

Hope this doesn't disappoint

I haven't been through Porthmadoc since 1979 and I recognised that road/railway topped wall across the estuary immediately - see my post on the Fiddlers Ferry topic about this kind of thing!

BTW - this route looks really promising!

Thanks for the support.

This is my first route so I'm learning as I go along. I'm GUESSING that the Port-TYB section will be ready sometime in September - but I'm not really sure how long arranging the scenery objects and texturing the cuttings etc.. is going to to take me.

Not sure about the method of release - as I'm not sure of size - but I GUESS that it'll be the usual download + cd.

Regards,

Excellent so far. I particularly like the stone wall texture used on the Cob - all it needs is a traffic jam down below with 2 Wallace Arnold coaches trying to pass each other and half a mile of caravans and boats behind :) .

Don't rush just because there are a few impatient folk on this forum. As Pat and others have shown, the difference between a good route and an excellent route is attention to detail and that takes time. Is the route set modern day or in slate days?

If you decide to put the route on CD, and Kevin allows you to include his stock, I'll happily write a few activities for you. Kevin, we need a diesel. You can't have a series of FR activities without at least one breakdown. :) My preference would be a really scruffy Upnor Castle as in the 70s and 80s.

I'll answer a couple of points for Colin as I think he may be on holiday now.
The route will be modern era to start with.
It will be built to the same "scale" as Steve Pontins Talyllyn route, so will use the standard track. Everything will be suitably scaled up so it will still appear NG. (+ the advantage of being able to see the stock).

Martin, diesels are on the way, Mary ann has been started as well as Moewyn, but I want to finish off Mountaineer first before I get too involved.

I'm making the welsh highland. It is quite fictional but realistic in the more inportant places (Towns and Aberglasyn Pass ). I have laid all the track (Standard Track With 2x scale) and some of the scenery and it should be out by OCTOBER.

P.S I need some engines to run on it! A little Tallylyn 0-4-2 cannot manage
the aberglasyn pass!
P.P.S Is anyone making a Welsh Highland Garratt

Looking forward to trying the route out.

Ffestiniog stock was regularly used on the WHR in the 1920-30's and should be powerful enough. Also there is a WHR Baldwin and 2 types of coach available for download. I will probably be making a WHR garrat, just not sure when I'll be able to start.

Wow have you got any screen shots? The WHR has in fact always been one of my favorite Welsh Lines, the long streatches of gradient at 1:40 always impressed me. And although I think the new WHR is comercial I still like the idea of Being able to travel on a 46 mile round trip on Narrow Gauge Steam.

As for the comment about a Talyllyn 0-4-2 not being able to manage Aberglasyln pass, I shall make no comment
:D

I'll get you some screenshots by tomorrow or monday. Anything you'd like? How do I convert them into jpegs? and how do I load them up?

P.S I have the Baldwin and the 2 coaches but they struggle. The little
0-4-2 never made it out of the aberglasyn pass! (Got hit by an ai train)

Forgot to tell you :o
I'm making 2 engines for the route myself!
I've only had TSM for 2 days but i've strated on Bedgelert and Russel.
If anyone else is doing them, carry on! We could see who's is best! (not mine :( )

In all fairness I have to say that I have started work on Russell (and Moel Tryfan) but don't know when they will be ready. Please don't let this stop you working on your version.

BTW, I'm glad the baldwin struggles a bit, it did in real life (from what I can remember reading)

Cheers
