Starting a (virtual) family

Post by jefran »

While researching the Groudle Glen 2-4-0s I came across drawing of a tiny Bagnall 0-4-0ST that seemed of a similar size to the GGR locos, closer inspection confirmed this, and overlaying the drawings was very revealing. The boiler, cylinders and wheels were pretty well identical. So as I was looking for something to practice Price-Bagnall valve gear on, and this had it, I built one. I also had a drawing for the 6x9 version, so I did one of those and the 9x12 followed equally naturally.

At least 3 others will follow soon including the very rare variant with inside link valve gear - making 4 engines with 4 valve gears.

Thanks - Pixie is the middle one - and I have just realised that the texture has slipped on the 9x12 's saddle tank!

They Are Adorable! I wish I could pick one up and snuggle it. ^_^

Very cute, I like the middle one best. That's the type of engine I could see suitable for a small garden line.

.... there is such a thing as mixing business and pleasure, snuggling a small steam engine is most certainly mixing it, not to mention the impracibilities of doing such a thing with the engine in steam .. :D

The family has just got bigger by one, slipped in behind the tiny "20 HP" 0-4-0. The new one is an 0-4-2ST (though by the late 1970s the trailing truck had been discarded), with inside link motion. I have only done one side so far, but of the 4, Price-Bagnall, Walschaerts, Baguley and Stephenson, it has proved the hardest and I am going to avoid it for some time.

I did have the idea of doing something like the old GEM 009 Varikit, where you could produce multiple variations on the same theme, chimney style, domes, bunker, sand boxes, skirts etc etc all on the same basic carcase. I thought of producing a basic loco, less boiler, cab roof, couplings etc, which could either be added to in 3D Canvas (for which you would obviously need 3DC with the export facilities) or to which bits could be added using freight animation. The ideal would be a menu of chimneys, cabs, couplings etc but I believe only one freight animation can be used at one time. Is this a goer?

Yes you can only have one freight anim at a time but you could by use of sub-folders in your loco folder create a way of swapping them over - like I did with my RH&DR Blue Train Stock so that way you could have multiple options of coupling etc..

3 more members of the family. The more obscure one has its name emblazoned on the tank, but who are the others?

One is a conversion to overhead electric traction carried out in a North Wales Slate Quarry (Glodfla Ganol I think, but no idea on what the engines name is)

Actually, it is The Eclipse- The Coalition has outside frames, though an otherwise excellent set of pictures on a mine exploring site has the 2 mixed up.
