In your visit, can I recommend you call off at the WHR ( P ) ? One of the best book shops a preserved line has to offer.

Is that Llanfair C, at the end of the Welshpool line? If so we'll be short of time that day and on the road home asap I should think.

In fact if you like the smell of Coal you may be in for a real treat at the moment. The number of operational FR coal fired locos increased to 3 today, with Earl of Meironeth out on test - the first coal fired double engine since 1971...

Martin, see my PM :)

If in a hurry Andrew's chip shop in Welshpool High Street is very good.

I know that many despise the Snowdon Mountain Railway for its commercialism, but it is a great experience, particularly if you travel behind a steam loco rather than the diesels. But even behind a diesel it is an experience to remember.
It IS expensive, but don't be tempted to take a one way ticket! Many people do this, thinking that the walk down will be easy, see what the footpath is like and decide to ride down, only to discover that it will cost them in total way above what they would have paid for a return fare.

With a wide choice of Real Ales. Well worth a visit!- and England 0-4-0t Princess stood in the bar area, talk about Railwayana on display!

Oh and if you go on the Ffestiniog, I wouldn't bother stopping over at Blaenau its not the pleasantest of places, a few times I've been there theres been rather unwelcoming welsh Chavs shouting abuse in Welsh at the train. . Stay on the train and if you want a break somewhere Tan-y-Bwlch is a lovely spot in the woods withy a really good cafe.

Thanks for that David. I never like going on 'tourist' trains to the end of the line only to come straight back - I prefer to break my journey, do a bit of walking and come back later if only to see something of the scenery or industry the railway was built to serve.

So your warning about Blaenau is welcome.

Never had a problem in Blaenau with the local juveniles. If you have never seen a slate tip and the slate industry infrastructure, it's worth a visit just to see how large the workings where. Some massive rope planes still in evidence.
