Hi Chris
Not sure about the route yet. I quite fancy a 3ft gauge one
with Isle of man and Irish stock.
Am going to try and model " SUTHERLAND " ex manx northern,
but in order to fit std, sim track I will need to scale up by 1.57 to 1
and I`m not sure what the narrow gauge boys will like that.
Will keep you posted

Sutherland isnt a Manx Northern Engine. Your thinking I think of MNR No.3 Thornhill built in about 1880, which became IoMR No.14 in the 1905 takeover by the IoMR of the MNR.
Very similar to No.7 Tynwald, the two engines being built 6 months apart to almost the same design. Thornhill never carried MNR numbers on the chimmney, ie a No.3, however did have the standard IoMR fittings added when it became an IoMR engine.
Read David Lloyd Jones's book "The Manx Peacocks" it has all the details about the engines, including I think speculation as to whether No.14 ever ran on the IoMR before the 1905 takeover on testing runs and such like...

Alternativley you could be thinking of MNR No.1 Ramsey, built in 1879 by Sharp Stewarts. Ran on the MNR for all of its life, being scrapped in 1912. On the IoMR takeover she was kept with sister engine Northern, to shunt the Ramsey Dockyards.
Looked like a big version of the Southwold Sharpies.

Caledonia and the Sharp Stewarts were very different engines. Cale' is a Dubs product, 0-6-0 and I think a lot larger than the Sharp Stewart tanks, which were 2-4-0's.
Yes David's book is fantastic. An update would be wonderfull, so much having happened in the last 7 years. Its amazing to think that at some points in the 90's the IoM was down to 2 working steam engines, and now has 7!!!!
