Building a x2 scale (MSTS tracks) reservoir construction site in the Yorkshire Dales. Going quite well so far (pics poss at some point).
Question - what are the ethics ? Lots of bits and bobs downloaded, some scaled up etc.
So far for my own use. Do I need to get permissions from all of the authors if I am making it available as a freeware download ? I know that it is good practice but it would involve alot of backtracking.
thoughts ?

As I understand things, if you're going to use downloaded stuff on a freeware route you need the permission of the original author unless when they uploaded it it was made available for use in freeware routes (if theres a read me with the download it should address this).
Now to my real reason for responding - a shared interest in reservoir railways! Are you doing a real one or a fictitious one?

Heya,
Contact as many of the authours as possible, one email send to all of them or the same PM to them all is good practice and only polite. Contact details should be in the readme's with the files... if youve kept the original UKTS zip files then trawl through them.
If it on here as freeware the chances are they wont mind at all, if youve 'borrowed' from other routes, they may get annoyed.
If there are no contact details, id just go on regardless, most however will have something. And you'll soon find out when you release the route if they arnt happy...

its a fiction railway. Its sort of Yorkshire Dales but with stuff nicked from the Nidd valley reservoirs. Its about 4 miles long I should think with a pretty steep gradient. There is a water works (of sorts) , a village, the reservoir and its houses. Still working through some parts of it. I have the scour valves and dam walls/towers complete. the track laid and the geography sorted. It needs still quite alot of building works. Typical dales barn v1 looked all wrong so thats going back to the drawing board but some of the hardest stuff is proving to be getting the track right. To much "big views" whereas driving round the dales there are alot of tree lined roads.
I should think it'll be another month or so before I am happy with it as a first release.
Thanks for the advice about authorship.

Tree lined routes are always a problem. Something ive found. Try downloading Ian Jenkins wonderfull trees and their patches. With them you also get a forest.dat file (or if not its easy to create). Very usefull for lots of trees and it not hitting the fps...

Sounds interesting!
I walked the Nidd Valley trackbed (or at least those bits you can get to) a few years ago and it's a route I'd consider building at some point.
Give me an excuse to visit the butchers at the bottom of Pateley Bridge main street as well - best pork pies I've ever tasted!
I've got quite a few books on the various reservoir railways in and around Yorkshire, so if I can help in any way, please let me know.

Thanks for the advice I'll try that. Think i'm going to have to build my own trackside bushes etc though as I can't really get any to fit. Oh for the MSTS equivilent of lichen and flock !
Got diverted back into eng files as my gradients made mincemeat of the files that I had built. But now success so I can go back to testing and building. Still not happy with the trackwork and its def a no boogie stock route, the curves just lock them solid. Strangely 6 wheel locos are not a problem. wierd.
I am going to try to build the spillway tonight. hmmm...

Progressing apace with the line. Scenery done for the dam area and the first 1/3rd or so. Its slow work as there are so many stone walls to add for the Dales. I am going to try and upload some pics at some point but I am not sure how to do it. Anticipated first release should be mid dec I should think.

I hopethat here are thumbs (linked to bigger pics) of the route so far.
Since the last post I have had other diversions, like I have bought a 1/5th share in an aeroplane (i'm a pilot) which has rather been occupying my time - along with the odd flood.
However, the route is now 100% drivable and about 50% or so sceniced to this level of detail. There is a sort of blank space in the middle that I am still deciding what to do with.
Maybe I need to build some nice farm buildings or a quarry... but work continues so its not one of those WIP that go nowhere.
I reckon a beta test version for April at the current rate !!!!!!!!
ok here goes to test for thumbs...

Im speechless, thats stunning! Am very very impressed with all that, and will certainly be getting this when it comes out. Well done. One of those really nice routes by the look of it perfect for killing a couple of hours shunting!
