This is 10 1/4inch version which from June is living on our Local Rudyard Lake Railway. Maybe it will be at Railfest until then.

Although I was fortunate enough to know that this route was in the pipeline, it is still a wonderful surprise to see how magnificent the line will look.
The (real) railway’s engineer, Mr E.R.Calthrop, had spent much time in India as a locomotive inspector and was greatly influenced by what he saw there, hence the colonial feel to the railway’s stock.
The two locos were named “E R Calthrop” and “J B Earle”. They were built by Kitson & Co and even boasted split cab roofs, a feature often seen abroad, to keep the temperature in the cab a little cooler!

Calthrop was the engineer for the Barsi Light Railway, in India. He wrote several papers based on his methods, which were recently collected and published. Some of his designs for the Barsi included eight coupled tank locos. Now that would have been something to see... plans etc to the usual address ;)

Current Rolling Stock Status is:-

NG Loco(s)
~~~~~~~
Loco Shape 90% (beyond what you see above) L&M Initial Livery Skins @ 80%. Currently matching texture depths for weathering.
Lots of time being burned getting .eng file settings, and doing silly things like sourcing suitable very high pitched whistle, etc, etc.
Later L&M/North Staffs and LMS period livery to do.
Cabview built and complete, 1024x768 front only.
Transporter Wagons
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Both lengths complete and base skinning complete, needs livery changes for LMS.

Open Wagons
~~~~~~~~~
Just starting
Bogie Van
~~~~~~~

No action yet

Std gauge Ride-On wagons for transporters being built, more work than you may think, as for every wagon needed you have to make............

Wagon set to normal rail height for AI use at Waterhouses.

Wagon set to L&M std gauge stub siding rail height (Scenic Static).

Wagon as a complete freightanim to "ride" the transporters. And....as you cannot freightanim a freightanim, opens have to be built as loaded and unloaded.

STD Gauge
~~~~~~~
Permission gained (Thanks!) to use Terry Thornton's North Staffs 2-4-0T (correct for branch) in NS and LMS liveries. Also to use other freeware as required.
Permission gained (Thanks!) from Richard Scott and his Midland Coaches already modified and completed in NS livery for AI use at Waterhouses. (as I did with L&Y livery coaches for Skipton).
Incidentally, while of course things are different now in many places, I rode the line on my bike and photo surveyed the line's path and surrounds from end to end, aren't digital cameras wonderful!!! :wink:
I'll show significant progress in this forum, so those being a nuisance seeking progress reports will be blacklegged and sent corrupt CD's when line released, so don't, OK!!!!!!!!!!!! :wink:
PS
Re: the link with the Barsi Railway, which shared the "odd" gauge.......... their diesel railcar ran trials on the L&M before leaving for India. I have only ever seen one (poor) picture.
Anyone wishing to contribute can research this area, find plans, even build it if they like :-? (Please!)...............feedback via this forum please.
And a polite word of warning...do NOT believe any one book or article on the L&M at face value without getting plently of matching cross comparisons..............it was dismantled a long time ago, plenty of time for misconceptions and errors to creep in!!!
PPS
While the live steam model pictured above is a very very nice thing, it's NOT a scale model..........so don't compare from it!!!!!!!!!!!
As just one example, it's cylinder covers/faces are inside (narrower than) the footplate line, the real L&M locos had cylinder cover skinning OVER the footplate edge...................
and it has oversize windows...............
and it has oversize whistles...............
I presume the authors have access to " The Leek and Manifold Light Railway " by " Manifold " ( 1955 ) and " The Manifold Valley and its Light Railway " by Keys and Porter ( 1972 )
I understand that a new history of the line is due out later in the year. I have seen some of the loco and stock drawings and if their quality is anything to go by, it will be a corker!
70 years after the line failed and was dismantled, I would expect that the only likely source for "new" drawings are already well known existing drawings......????
I have the Keys Book and others, don't know the 1955 one. There is naturally an awful lot of recycling of pictures, etc, and conflicting data..........and so you can give yourself a very bad time second guessing which Author got it right (if at all!!)
Currently still looking for good clear pics of the bogie VAN, especially with LMS livery.
Dave
Indeed, but the quality of new drawings taken from original source material can vary enormously. Just look through the Wild Swan histories of the Talyllyn, Vale of Rheidol and the Ashover railways, as well as the recent book on the Welshpool & Llanfair from Railway Romances and you will see what I mean.
It is also possible that access has been gained to hitherto unavailable source material as archives become more widely and easily available - this is a general observation rather than specific knowledge about any new source of Kitson material.
My comment was based on seeing drawings that appeared well laid out, clearly drawn and much more than just a side elevation. As for their historical accuracy, I will leave others to judge, but from the quality of the author's and illustrator's other work I think the book is likely to be regarded quite highly.
But let's wait until publication and pass judgment then.
Yes, lets, however your comment re: side elevation could be missread to indicate existing available drawings are side elevation only........so to make it clear, they are not. Even the Oakwood book has four view plans as published in Model Railway News by R Tustin.
