I didn't think there was a point in diging up the old topic since it went pear Shaped!

Right, a while ago i started building the West Lancshire Light Railway Route for Train Simulator. The Route went a bit dull because i got the track ect...... wrong. So in the next week or so i hope to have my CD writer working to put the Harz & R&C on CD & make sure i have the room. So i hope to have it back soon!

Hi,
Today it was off with the thinking cap and on to the computer as the first steps to the building of the 'West Lancshire Light Railway for MSTS, tonight i'll lay some track (i think), at the moment it's just 6 tiles (Is that to many?). Do you know how i can tell how many miles of track i've layed in MSTS or else this railway's length will just be on my brain (aaaaaaaa)! Screnshot's soon hopfully!

Is it posible for sombody to make a track texture for the West Lancs as i don't want to clog Tim with work. Here's a pic taken by Tim to base it on! Thanks.

FRS....

First of all are you using DEM? IF not I would suggest it. Could make things a lot easier. Secondly for a track texture, might I suggest taking a 'plan view' (ie overhead) shot of the track when you visit the line, about 3 sleepers worth is about right I think, this makes it much easier to sort out a track texture.

What books are you using as research? They might have something in maybe?

DEM uses map data to basically give you a contoured map on which you simply build the terrain! Much easier as in involves next to no terraforming and results in far more accurate terrain.

Id have thought a couple of reference books, or at least a few films of photos would be an essential part of building a route? Something you would collect before you even begin. Websites are ok, and personal knowledge is very good, but it always helps to have a set of good photos to work from.

On my current project, im using 3 or 4 books, my own personal photographs, information from a number of web sites, and an hour or so's worth of video footage, and thats just to get the track laying correct!

It might be worth getting at least a book or two, (or getting your parents to buy them for you, (maybe the railway shop at Harbour would have something on it?)) BEFORE you begin work on the project. At least that way you have a reference to work from.

Yikes! So where do I get DEM? I've a friend who fires on the FR that comes to fire and will test the route as he has been there and like's MSTS!

Very, very true, something I must take into account...for realistic track diagrams.

A Desicion has been made not use DEM as the railway is short and it would be a waste of time.

Folowing the above track has started to be layed at Beconsall!
Pic's after i check if the layout look's right.

Hi

The shortest route would make no difference, after all the WLR is not flat, and a waste of time, you're kidding right? It takes almost no time at all, even with the 2x tutorial, and if you can prove that you will actually finish the route (you're track record is not sparkling when it comes to routes :-? ), I am sure other people would help you to do it. However, if you deem DEM a waste of time, a tiny route like this would probably also be one, unless it has things like proper terrain to make it 'worth it', after all, whats the point of flat terrain with the odd lump or dip because of the rubbish RE terrain mesh with a bit of track going from nowhere to nowhere, when you could have something well detailed and worth your time and effort. After all, its not a race to finish a route (I should know  )

Chris,

I totally agree, even on something as small as the WLR I would *always* use DEM.... you just wont get the terrain looking right otherwise. For the sake of about an hours work, comparitive to the amount of time you'll spend on the route in RE its nothing, besides, it will save you literally hours of terrain work later on.

As for the number of tiles... well surely its however many you need to get the route the right size?!?! Its not good ramming a 12 tile route into 6 tiles. They are 2km sqaure tiles, so work it out using an OS map... or use DEM, and it generates however many you need!

Id really think about this before jumming in with the track work... your wondering if the track 'looks right'???Are you using track marker files? Might be worth while if you dont know where the tracks meant to go!

I would have thought terraforming would be the hardest part of all, I've tried it before and anything to make it easier, let alon improve it like DEM does is a bonus, I'd recommend it.
