Tis' the season to build coaches....

Post by smudge5609 »

Just to wish everyone a happy christmas and offer this non-seasonal gift to the NG community...

My latest project, Lynton and Barnstable coaches in both 2X scale and truescale (UKNG). I will package them up properly after christmas, until then help yourself to the test version. 6 Coaches in total, observation cars, gaurds and third class all catered for!! :D

Agreed, great track texture, could you tell us where it's from please? High detail coaches there, specially the interiors! Keep up the good work. :)

Thanks,
Chris

ok, the track texture is my hacked version of a standard gauge texture. The original textures are made by Michael Greenhill and are available from uktrainsim. Without his permission I can not really distribute them.

I will try and e-mail him and see if I can distribute a modified version.

L&B Coaches

Post by mccormackpj »

Beautiful! But what livery are they in? The L&B history by Prideaux, Brown & Radcliffe says that originally the "ends, lower panels and mouldings were a reddish-brown shade, while the upper panels were finished in varnished white ... the roofs were painted white, and the lampholders, underframes and running gear were black". Later on a single colour was used on some carriages, possibly the reddish-brown.

Earlier this year I had discussions with some colleagues from the W&L about the L&B livery, with some stating that it was "L&NWR-style", ie plum and spilt-milk. The quotation above seems to confirm the 'style' element (ie, which bits were painted the same) but not the colour. I checked with the (new) L&B and they confirm that the 'reddish-brown' was a madder lake. The Essex Area of the L&B are currently restoring coach no.7 (3rd with open observation compartment) in this livery, I think at Mangapps. Go to http://www.therailwaycarriages.fsnet.co ... rriage.htm and click on '7 - 2465' to see then-and-now shots. If you double click on the 'now' shot it will enlarge.

Even so, I actually like the L&NWR plum & split-milk - there are too few coaches in this distinguished pre-grouping livery, and as for the blackberry black locos it's enough to make even a Bristolian (and therefore GWR) man sigh!

I suspect I have opened a can of worms with this info - hope it doesn't spoil your Christmas ..

I think the can of worms was open before I started building!! :D
Looking through the Oakwood press book about the railway, the livery is based on the "Lake" and "White" livery. As you mentioned above, basically mirroring the LNWR scheme. Although the image above doesn't show it, it is a deep blue/plum colour below and creamy/white above.

I'm sure you realize how hard it is to build a colour scheme when all you have is black and white photos. I think when the southern railway took over, the stock was painted all one colour, whether this was green to match the standard gauge stuff, i don't know!

Anyway, now the coaches are built, it won't take too long to change the colour of the stock. I have a dark maroon version sitting on my pc, as I was sure they were originally that colour!

Anyway, i'm open to healthy discussion and change! I plan a southern version set eventually as well.

As for the track texture, Michael has let me distribute my modified version, so I will upload it sometime soon.

Wow! Lovely!

Must release those wagons I made mustn't I.

Edit: The Southern Did indeed paint these one colour which was all over Maunsel Olive Green. Look at SG coaches from this pierod for referance.

Why 2 vacuum brake pipes? I assume one is steam heating? Which according to Bruce was only fitted during SR days?

Excellent models though! Well done

Shhh! you're not supposed to have noticed that :D !
Yep, your right there should only be the brake pipe on the pre SR stock. What can I say, everytime I tried to un-merge the pipes, 3D canvas crashed and hence they are still there.

L&B Livery

Post by mccormackpj »

Chris -

Glad to hear that the repaint hasn't caused you to tear your hair out or be otherwise unseasonal! I think the L&B coaches look smashing - another incentive to help out the folk at Woody Bay to make it become reality once again. The new Lynton & Barnstable: 'Paradise Rebuilt'.

Happy Christmas!

Thanks for the picture Bruce. I assume that this is something to do with the new L and B group and they must be able to research the colours better than I can?

So I guess the Lake and White (LNWR) was never!! I'll get the paintbrush out over christmas and have a paint.

its the Cambrian coast route, around Dovey Junction. Usually home to a standard gauge sprinter, but not today!

It's quite well porportioned, apart from the stations!

Bruce, so you're terraforming, track texturing... What is this top secret project you are up to?
