Evan,
The engine never really worked in the quarries themselves. She worked the Penrhyn 'main line' a 2ft line some 7miles long, which connected the quarries with Port Penrhyn, running down through Bethesda. The line had gradients at 1:38 so powerfull engines were needed. It also had no real loading gauge resrictions, hence the generous cab and larger appearance than the 'quarry' hunslets.

We should thank The Baldwin loco company that these engines still exist. Penrhyn quarry purchased 3 of the WD 2-6-2 Baldwins to replace the Hunslets but the Baldwins were so poor compared to the Hunslets that the Hunslets were put to work again. The Baldwins were given every opertunity to prove them selves they were even modified to make them look more like the Huslets being given full penrhyn livery and capped chimneys.

One of these Penhryn Baldwins (which were all 2-6-2s not 4-6-0s btw) still survives in Australia, and is named Felin-Hen, a locoation on the Penhryn 'main line'.
