Ffestiniog Double Fairlie

Post by spontin »

A topic copy from General Discussion
This was posted in response the topic regarding a Festiniog Route under development.

So now I have to show some pictures on my latest project - very WIP(!!) and some way off finishing but thought it worth uploading some screenshots as they may be relevant!! :D

In terms of the discussions earlier re the gauge, I confess that DLG has been built for a 2ft gauge (as per Ffestiniog). I have built true 2ft track network and my plan has been to go on and build the Ffestiniog on the same basis as my Talyllyn route.
As I am now much closer to the Ffestiniog after my house move, this was a logic step but very much a long term build project.

I have also shown below two screenshots of DLG on the two gauges. In my opinion, the difference is not very noticeable to the casual observer so both assets could be used.

I will post progress on this loco here.
Keep in touch :D

New sound files are on shortly their way to you Steve - any help I can provide just shout. Loco looks lovely. I live about 5 mins walk from the NRM and used the Farlie extensively in researching for the Skylark so any questions or details you need a quick pic or description just ask and I will run over.

Great Richard, look forward to those.
Appreciate the offer of pictures of Livingstone Thompson.
Didn't realise she was in the NRM so a useful source of pictures at a leisurely pace.

Great to see some activity over here again, even if it's in a simulator I never seem to get on with! The Fairlie is tucked into the space between City of Truro and King George V, with a pile of FR chairs underneath the King's tender.

Hi A couple more screenshots of the loco.
Progress being made and the physics now look good thanks to Richard Maxted and I am now working on the detailing (Cab, nameplates, brake hoses, Ffestiniog couplings etc.).
Slow but sure, I'm afraid with limited time due to kitchen chaos!! New kitchen being fitted etc!!

A glowing Fire!!

Nice new glossy paintwork!!

I am trying out some Specular settings that I found out about and seeing if they enhance the glossy/reflection sides of the model (including the non-glossy surfaces) that add a bit more realism??

Really lovely seeing it coming together Steve!! I envy your skill and patience.

While I can't help you with the specular settings, are you a member of trainsimdev? It might be worth asking there as well as here.

Thanks
I think the specular settings are ok but because of 3DC, it needs tweaking in the final compiled files is RW Tools but think it is worth it.
Still need to dull the brightness a bit but txt will be the final bits.
What I would really like are some good photos of cab interior of DLG if anyone can get hold any.

Cheers

Really, the cabs of all the Fairlies are more or less the same, though EOM probably differs so Merddin would be a better comparison.
But I'll see what I can do. :D

Quick update, found these on the net but I have asked some of my friends in the Ffestiniog if they have any, and hope to have some responses soon.

This is DLG's cab (driver's side) when it first came out the works in 1992:

I took these at the NRM in 2006, I am afraid that they are all driver's side (at least I am fairlie sure they are)

Not much news to report - slight hiccup causing a small rebuild.

Detailing externally at the moment and will post some picture shortly. The cab will take some time to detail so may leave that until last and get a partial release available.
Would like some realistic coaches as well so thinking that through.

Ouch, hope it wasn't too serious.
Looking forward to seeing more pictures.

As for some coaches, presuming you mean you want to make them, I think the best coaches to start with would be of a type that a series was made of.

First example, the Victorian-style Marshall bogie compartment coaches like coach 17 here for example. I think there are four of them on the railway and they were originally built in 1876. If you want something of the same vintage as a Fairlie then these are probably the coaches to start with. However, if they prove a tricky build then they can wait.

Image

Or if you would prefer something more modern, then maybe a super-barn coach of which there are about 15 so far of different generations.

Image

And with that, possibly a barn observation car.

Image

At the moment the only FR cars we have in TS2016 is the 4-wheel toast rack coaches.
