Ffestiniog Route

Post by jdtech »

Is there an ETA for the ffes route? I needed a new topic since the old one isn't noticed much!

My understanding is that it's still ongoing but I would add that in many ways it's the same size of project as the SVR but entirely freeware and with fewer contributors.

Work continues at a rate dictated by the personal commitments of those involved and I've heard of no release date for the final version :)
Cheers

I will leave a release date for Colin (Batroost) to announce.

I have to say that work has been probably a lot slower then anticipated due to various things (work/home commitments, illness's etc), but I would expect an "alpha" test version will be released fairly soon.

Cheers

The plan is to release an 'alpha' this coming week. It might appear on the FR website but this isn't confirmed yet.

The most important thing (so that no-one is disappointed) is to realise that this isn't a finished route. That is, the track runs all the way to Blaenau (finished this evening!) but the scenery doesn't - and the landscape's a bit lumpy in places. Having said that there's some nice bits as well. And I haven't finished texturing so it probably won't work in the winter or snow.

Still, you'll be able to run full-trips anyway with Kevin's rolling stock.

It's taken a year to get this far so be gentle with me...

Regards,

Yeah the Talyllyn has been overused for non-talyllyn stock seeing the fact that it was the spearhead for MSTS NG routes! I do think it could be improved with loads of more buildings and scenery though.

The Talyllyn Route was only done as a BETA, Spontin did have plans (not sure if he still does) to redo it with proper terraforming (at the moment its only half the length it should be) And I guess new buildings will follow then. However I agree that it does look a little barren in places.

Thats why I prefer x-tracks and truescale work, there are so many more buildings to choose from, and it also allows mixing of gauges, something which i think looks very effective with narrow gauge.

It will be great to get the FR route - warts and all. Can't wait to give Kev's FR stock a blast on the proper route.

Don't forget the Isle of Man has more narrow gauge than you can wave a stick at. Steam - Diesel - Electric and even Horse power - Visitors most welcome...........

FR is expected to be around 70MB to download - lots and lots of non-default or customised buildings and objects (but there's still bare bits!) - don't know for sure yet as I haven't trimmed it down yet. Another couple of evenings work.

(And I really like playing on the Talyllyn route)

I really like the TR route too - at least its somewhere to run the NG stock

70MB huh - my poor old 56K has got some work to do then, but shouldn't take too long as I get a good connection rate on the state of the art Manx Telecom line

Its the non default textures that do the damage (MB). Thats why I had to have two seperate zips for textures on warrington railways. The rest of the route eg tiles and shapes zip up quite nicely unlike the ace files. Have you run it through route riter? From a guess at your estimate of 70mb there must be at least 60mb of non-default textures in there.

Look forward to it.
