Talyllyn Adventure 2

Post by spontin »

A while back I mentioned that I was doing some rework on the Talyllyn route and I just want to say that it's almost done!!

While not a complete reconstruction, what I have been doing is to rebuild a number of assets to use the newer features of TS2014 such as the new shaders, lighting effects, etc.

This is a brief summary of included changes :
  • A working Level Crossing at Pendre
Re-built Pendre sheds to use new textures and shaders
3D Loco shed, BlockHouses (signal boxes) so that windows are see-thru and buildings have internal features
    Lighting in 3D buildings
    Reworked night-time textures
The new Carriage shed at Quarry Siding "The Guest House"
2 versions of no 4 - Edward Thomas & Peter Sam - rebuilt to latest loco builds
Diesel loco no 8 - Merseysider
Rain effects on the windows of no8 & no4
    2 x GVT coaches
Reworked Loco physics & Sounds (many thanks to Richard Maxted)
Quick Drive routes & consists (again thanks to Richard Maxted)
    A few new scenarios
Now the bad news.....
Because of the changes to some of the assets, I have had to create a NEW route and that means existing Talyllyn users will need to UN-INSTALL the original before loading the new one.
Sorry, I tried keeping both but the change of assets caused big problems.
Also, distribution will again need to be CD but I will allow the choice of donating £4 to the Talyllyn or not so that current users can opt out of a second donation if they choose.

When.....????
Big question as I have just seen that TS2015 is around the corner so I think I will wait for that, check for compatibility issues and then go for it.

My website, http://www.sptalyllyn.co.uk, will be updated soon with some screenshots etc but will let you know of progress.

I must thank Richard Maxted (of Leek & Manifold fame) for his help and permission to include a load of his assets and QD routes to be distributed within this Talyllyn CD. His work on the QDs & loco physics is awesome!!

Oooooo - goody, goody, yum, yum !

Most excellent news indeed, though personally I think it's not the best decision to wait for TS2015. In previous years, some builders have made that same decision to postpone, only to find there are several months of work involved to resolve "compatibility" issues and / or build in some of the new features. It's even happened that the updated route never was published, and I hope that fate doesn't befall your efforts here. Please reconsider that delay, especially if you're already close to publishing ...

Fair point but considering I still need to finish quite a bit of "publishing bits", it's likely to run into September.
It's fairly low risk that it will have any incompatibility issues with TS2015 as it uses most of the stuff from TS2014 and they would need to ensure backward compatibility for the recent stuff if nothing else.

I doubt if there will be any compatibility issues with TS2015 but It still makes sense to hold off publishing until after TS2015 has been launched.

I will be keen to obtain a copy of the new route. When I demonstrate TS at exhibitions and shows, this narrow gauge route is great hit with the kids and fascinates the adults, :D

An updated version is something to really look forward to.

Hi,

Great news about the new version, will definitely buy when it is released - in the meantime could you perhaps help me with an issue affecting the current version? I have recently had to re-install Steam and TS2014 ( long story which I won't bore you with ), so am re-installing Talyllyn Adventure.....as we moved house around 18 months ago I can't find the original CD ROM so have reinstalled from a backup that I took - all runs and looks fine except that the trackside banks are missing...when leaving Wharf and heading to Pendre the trees are floating in mid-air instead of sitting on a bank, also on leaving Pendre some of the ground under the track is missing...I stopped at this point so not sure what else may be missing - all other scenery items seemed to be ok though. I have looked around in my backed up folders to see if there is anything obviously for Talyllyn which needs to be copied over but cannot find anything, although I'm not really sure what I should be looking for - any ideas what I should do please?

thanks,

Andy

As I mentioned in the original message, if you buy the the upgrade, you'll need to uninstall the original route to avoid clashes with the few updated scenery assets which I was unable to avoid.
It would have been nice to simply update the asset but TS2014 refuse to see and load the new asset unless it had a new name!!
If you load the new route and keep the original, the old route will use both the old assets & new asset in the same location.

You can keep both routes loaded and edit the old route to delete the new/old asset I think(!! - haven't proved this yet!!) but the only reason I can see anyone wanting to keep both is if they have a load of self built scenarios that they would lose.

One other thing I didn't mention as it is a last minute addition, is that the new route makes use of Richard Maxted's new Single Line Block signalling system which allows the Talyllyn to have AI passing loop trains!! :D
This works really well and makes a great improvement to the route.

Amazing! That's 1 thing I didn't like! So will the cd be delivered to us again? :)

As before, the CD is a non-profit venture, so you'll have opportunity to either buy the new version and donate some funds to the Talyllyn Railway again or simply pay for the cost of cutting a new CD & postage & packing.

You'll simply order the CD as a new user & the price will cover the material costs of just producing the cd & postage and packing.

All this will be explained on my website once everything is ready to go.

The current version can be seen at http://www.sptalyllyn.co.uk but this will be revamped shortly with the new details.

I am wondering if there is any chance of providing the "real" Douglas (i.e. the orioginal loco, not Duncan with the face on the smokebox)?

One of my very few (private) complaints about the original is only having Duncan with that silly face, and no version of Douglas.

Any chance?

Yes, I have plans to do the proper Douglas once the route is released.
I hope to release the TR livery & also the special livery that was done some months ago of which someone sent some good pictures of so that makes life easier :D
