I don't know if you're familar with this site http://www.uktrainsim.com but they do have a little range of downloads available - including some true scale stuff by me and Kev Martin - of whom you may have heard.

Don't apologise for going off topic - remember the Cartman principle.

Trainmad - why not stick to 2x scale for the time being - I have a cunning plan.

1) You can call me "Evan"...just "Evan"
2) I didn't want to be rude, I wanted to be sarcastic. :) sarcastic in a nice way :fadein:

So I'm sorry for being rude sp762...even though I wasn't trying to be rude...forgive me.

So if everything is ok now, can we go back on topic :)

Personally I like the 2x because it's easier for me to make in TSM.
But it does look freaky when put into a default route like S+C :o

You probably should make two versions of the route. One in 2x and the other Truescale

Evan,

1. Perhaps you might want to change your username - it does tend to give people the wrong impression of you. My name is Mike but sp762 was my first generated computer logon, back when computing was for real men - complete with pocket protectors!

2. Sarcasm is, according to Shakespeare, the lowest form of wit. This means that it generally has to be funny, at least on some level. In that sense, my posting was sarcastic because since you clearly know about ukts, you had not thought, perhaps, to look at the download library before asking your questions. This is different to rudeness - which would be if I had told you to b*gger off and look at the download library. Sarcasm hints at rudeness without actually going there.

3. I have firmly decided to build a truescale route myself, but it will obviously take time.

Cheers

(Off Topic I know but....)

Shakespeare didn't say it - in fact the word sarcasm doesn't appear in any of his collected works. Try Dostoyevsky's view on the subject:

Sarcasm: the last refuge of modest and chaste-souled people when the privacy of their soul is coarsely and intrusively invaded.

Just to get this back on thread.

I've been doing a lot of research into this area, and spent a lot of dollars on nice books that I can't tell my wife about!

I'm trying to figure out TSTF so that I can get some map contours into the sim, but it's an interesting exercise because of the large scale of the maps (1:10,000 trench maps)

The next interesting exercise is figuring out the route that the tranch railways actually took. I'm getting some data from the nice chaps at http://www.1914-1918.net, but as you can imagine, it's a fairly specialised area.

One of the books I managed to acquire is 'Light Rail From Arras' which is an fascinating account of the operations of 31st Light Railway Operating Company. Whilst a cracking good read, it doesn't contain very much in the way of useful information - especially since most of the junctions, block points and what have you were referred to in code to confuse 'the Hun' - naturally the corresponding maps don't seem to have survived!

The net result is that while the land forms and whatnot will be as accurate as I can make them, some of the track layouts may be conjectural.

Another challenge will be the variety and type of buildings required - especially because I don't live in Northern France. The MSTS French groups don't seem to be very well developed - especially in terms of scenery items. Anyone want to have a go?

http://www.theotherside.co.uk/tm-herita ... /arras.htm

On the rolling stock front, you can expect a couple more wagons in the next week, being classes H - 1500 gal water tank, and F - flat wagon. I'm having 'fun' texturing the Dick Kerr PE - anyone know anything about louvres? Additionally, I'm working on a 'Crewe Tractor'- 70% completed and another steamer, but that's a surprise.

Fred Ljundberg is working on a Baguely tractor (0-4-0 PM) - these were used in the Forestry camps in the UK and overseas - at least one is preserved: http://www.talyllyn.co.uk/ngrm/baguley_774.html

Well, that's the progress to date - my target for release is 9th April 2004 - being the anniversary of the commencement of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Mike, I have a lovely book of WW1 trench maps. It was printed in the UK about 6-7 years ago and is called 'Atlas of Armageddon' or a similar catchy title. Don't let that title put you off as it is page after page of reprints of the whole British front line, and support lines.

If you have an idea of where your route will be (was?) I could check this book for you and perhaps scan a page or two in, but it is large format (A3) so the scans will be chopped up a bit.

I have family connections on my wife's side around Ypres, and I know there were several lines around there.

Also don't worry too much about accurate track layouts - trench lines were often quite ephemeral and could be changed from month to month depending on where supplies needed to be shipped up for the next Big Push, so unless you have an accurate map for a particular line at a particular point in time....

Hi Martin,

the book is called 'Topography of Armageddon' and I managed to find a copy in our library (working for Defence has to have some perks.)

I'm looking at the areas behind Vimy Ridge, between Bethune and Arras and now have photocopies of the maps to 1:10,000 which I will scan and contour map.

However, it's good to know you've got a copy, since I had to freight this one up from Sydney, then read it in the library, because it's in the Reference Collection!

I'm still not sure whether to cut the trench lines in at the mapping stage or afterwards. Any thoughts?

Very unlikely to appear that close to the front lines - staff wallahs stayed well away from the mud & blood!
