I hate to be a spoilsport, but I wonder if Rowan Atkinson or the BBC considers his image to be copyright?

I remember watching an archive film fairly recently that had been taken during WW1. The camera and tripod had been on a flat wagon in front of a train, and was pushed along to the front, filming all the way. Apart from the almost complete destruction of everything along the route, two things stick in my memory:

1) the narrow gauge line ran diagonally across a standard gauge marshalling yard, ballast and track laid over the top of the standard gauge rails. Shell craters and mangled standard gauge wagons all over the yard made it unuseable for normal trains,

2) the narrow gauge line ran through the middle of a ruined church, supplying a gun emplacement in the nave.

So, is this a valid concept?

It certainly highlights that combining the pleasure of a sim and the seriousness of war is difficult.

Echoing Ian's comments .... I've seen plenty of pictures of the conflict, none of which had corpses or anything of that nature and it still looked very grim indeed.

I have a cunning plan... I will make a ruin and place it on the layout.

The whole concept sounds fascinating, and I certainly think that it would make a very interesting and uunique route (something that I feel can be achieved better with Narrow Gauge)

If the route is done well (have you put forward the idea on the route editing forum and maybe the General MSTS forums to see what the general opinion is on something this sensitive) and you check opinion as you go along I think that the route will be a winner.

I'm sorry I mentioned that whole thing - my point was to illustrate the difficulties involved. Bear in mind that many of the pictures would have been sanitised or touched up somewhat - especially if they were official ones.

I wouldn't want to put anyone off but it would require a degree of sensitivity on which we all agree :)

At the moment, it starts at a small french village, with a couple of sidings. It goes down into some old quarry workings, and is following them.
