A Trenches Route

Post by trainmad »

I saw Salvage Squad last night, and they were restoring an old ww1 simplex. (It never did arrive at the trenches because the war finished.) I thought it may be a good idea to build a fictional trenches route. Do you like the idea?

A trenches route would ben interesting, with lots of potention for activties and and complex track layout, rather than the usual end to end layout.

However, we really need more rolling stock first.

Kevin has done the simplex and the baldwin 4-6-0, and is working on a baldwin tractor. The Decauville is also out there but we need some oppersition, in the form of a Feldbahn 0-8-0.

More wagons would be needed, and also it is possible if Kevin could backdate 'Mountaineer' to represent the original Alco-Cookie locos. Also a baldwin 2-6-2 would complete the set.

For more info I recomend the Chemin de Fer Froissy Cappy Dompierre Website.

Thanks

Bruce

I'd forgot that I did actually start to convert mountaineer back to it's original appearance just after finishing it 6 months ago.

This was just a WIP shot and I realise the cab is a different colour to the rest of the loco.

At the moment I'm concentrating on finishing the Ffest/whr Rly stock (and work for the FR route) but I will try and finish this if theres any interest.

Cheers

Ohh wow, a WW1 trenches route would be excellent, with a huge complex of sidings and branches! Go for it...

Kevin, Mountaineer looks differenet without the ffes cab! I think i like it really!

Well done all,

Did anybody else see that Salvage Squad. They found out that this Simplex loco, was built to be shipped to france. But the war ended before it even got on the ship. It was sold to a Leeds sewage works and was then bought by a narrow gauge railway enthusiast who never got around to restoring it. Salvage Squad restored it and took it over to france where it was destined to go, and it ran on a french WW1 ralway.

I've been researching this for a while now. On my list of things to do are the other sorts of open wagons, and I've got a Dick Kerr 0-4-0 PE Tractor up to the skinning stage. I've finished a 'Crewe Tractor' but I'm waiting to verify a couple of details before it gets released. Diseasels are easy!

I don't know if it would necessarily be 'fun', when you think about the absolute carnage that happened on the Western Front.

(Not many buildings or trees to worry about though :-? )

I saw Salvage Squad i thought it was quite good but i wonder why they went to the festiniog and didn't see Mary Ann another WW1 simplex. A WW1 trenches route sounds like a good idea i will have to be done in good taste though some people got a bit annoyed when someone suggested a Bridge Over the River Kwai route.

On the subject of rolling stock don't forget the Hunslet 4-6-0's

The war deparment light railways web site is good site for more info on the WW1 railways http://www.wdlr.org.uk :)

Perhaps surprisingly, I also have that drawing - plus the full set from a recent RM. :scatter:

I had planned to start work on the Hunslet this weekend, time willing, but I want to finish off the PE first.

I also have some non NG stuff to work on.

Why don't one of you guys do the route, and I'll supply the rolling stock?

Cheers

Looking good Mike, and that Alco looks great Kev :o! A resink of Mountaineer into its 1996 - 97 livery (WD Grey) would be good too.

Bruce,
a WD version of Mountaineer already does exist. However, it is only available (on CD) from the Ffestiniog Railway shop. The CD includes 43 models of which 7 are exclusive to the disk. These are WD livery Mountaineer, Mountaineer in green livery, Prince in 2 types of green livery, Linda in Midnight Blue, Linda in Penryn guise and (not shown) a new updated version of Princess.

Hi Bruce,

No, as far as I know these will not be on a route CD, but will remain as exclusives to the FR Co.

Cheers
