The Quarry Hunselts were a series of locomotives built by Hunselt in Leeds, for various Quarrys in North Wales. They are extremlly common, nearly 1000 were built over the years. There were all to similar designs, 0-4-0 saddle tanks. Rfairle has made Britomart and Velinheli which are both Quarry Hunselts. There are several different design though, the most common is the Alice class.

Sillyevan27: I bet you dont lose steam engines in your room?
When the Quarries (Like Penrhyn and Dinorwic) went to steam haulage from horses, a lot og Quarry owners bought De-Winton vertical boilered locos, (nicknamed galloping tes urns) they were ideal for quarry work and were relatively cheap so were used up on the gallery levels
But in the late 1890's Hunslet began making the class of engines which later became known as Quarry Hunslets... They were more powerfull than De-Wintons, and became widley used in the Welsh Quarries, they were small and compact, yet very powerfull and had a decent length wheelbase so they went round the rought quarry trackwork (the De-Wintons had a habit of going straight on when they go to a bend) . There were various classes, the most numerous being the Alice and Port Classes, (called Alice class as 'Alice' was the first of the class to be built, and Port class because they were used on the Quays at Port Penrhyn) Other classes were the 'small' class as they were the smallest used in the Quarries, and then there were some one off's, like Britomart and Lilla...
Of the 100 or so built about 20/30 surivive some of which are in the USA, a lot can be found on Railways like the Bala (who have Holy War and Maid Marian) and The Llanberis Lake (who ave Elidir, Thomas Bach (formerly Wild Aster), Dolbadarn and Una) the Ffestiniog has Lilla and Britomart (along with Linda and Blanche the two Hunslets used on the Penrhn main line)
Hope this is of Help

Lol, the Quarry Hunslets are very nice engines, apparently they work very well, if you look at Dinorwic records, one of the locos did a 35 year stint on one of the top galleries without a majr overhaul! (ie: did not come down to Gil Fach Ddu but any overhaul work was done on site on the gallery level (which were not equipped for any sort of major work)) so they were also very reliable!

YEAH!
The black version is out
cool! I hope to see the green one soon.....but not TOO soon
Just a question. What engine is next on the MSTS Talyllyn Rly to-make list?
(corny phrasing
)
Will it be Douglas #6? Midlander #5? ...are there other engines?! (

Sillyevan27:
The GWR green version should be done next week hopefully....
Still to make from the Talyllyn:
No.3 Sir Hayden in later TR design (ie new cab)
No.5 Midlander
No.6 Douglas
No.8 Merseysider
No.9 Alf
No.10 Bryneglyws
Toby the Motor Trolley!
I have detailed photos for 9 and 10 (close ups I took whilst last in Tywyn so if there is demand I can mail them to anyone who wants to make them!)
The other varitaions on No.4 are:
No.4 in Talyllyn Green
No.4 in GWR Green
No.4 as Stewart
No.4 as Peter Sam
Kevin is doing the TR Green, and im doing the GWR Green.
In theory to make the set, No.3 as Falcon! Which never got done.

David was supposed to have been reskining Corris#3/TR 3 into falcom...or was it Sir Halndel into Falcon
What he told me was...was tha he ended up have FOUR faces on him o_O
I don't want to know how he did it...
I could do Stuart (which I am) and I think that Daz or David is doing Peter Sam...I need to ask them...
David is doing Duncan(s) from TR #6. If you want I could do Rusty
Is the GWR Green different from the Talyllyn Green??
It looks to me as if the two are the same
And I suppose that the #7-Toby engines are all Diesels right?
(I think "Alf", as you call it, is Fred in the Railway Series
)

Sillyevan27:
'Fred' in the railway series is I think No.8 Merseysider. 9 doesnt have a cab on it!
Seeing as neither Midlander, or Douglas have been built yet, isnt it a bit early to decide who is doing the reskins? No.6 had many liveries, and No.5 had at least two! However as neither are built they cannot be reskinned.
Yes GWR and TR green are different, TR green is lighter, its 'chrome' green as opposed to 'brunswick' green. The earlier TR greens were definatley lighter, they were a very blue/green colour as the railway didnt have proper TR green paint.
Of course the livery varies from engine to engine. When 7 was repainted last year it emerged in a darker green than when it went in. This was helped by the varnish of course and that it had more coats of paint than the first time.
One railway where you notice this a lot is the Isle of Man, look at their dark green liveries, and you can see variations from loco to loco, year to year! They purposley repainted No.10 GH.Wood in a lighter colour, with yellow not red lining so it showed up better on photos!
5,8,9,10 are desiels, as is the trolley at the moment, although it has had a petrol engine in it before.

Hmm.......Alf has no cab?!
I guess he isn't used much on rainy days eh!
OH yes. David you're right. Daz was planning on doing Peter Sam.
Probably a reskin of TR Green version then making his own with the Geisl ejector
(That'll be hard to do...
)
BTW, re there any pics of Edward Thomas while he had his Geisl ejector fitted?
I'd like to see what he REALLY looked like.

Sillyevan:
Never found any pics on the web, although there are many in books... Alf is used whenever its needed. % isnt very powerfull and until recently 10 was out of traffic to. 8 was under overhaul which only left 9.
You just get wet, which you do on the footplate anyway, cos the rain goes side ways through the cab... Doesnt normally bother people. You just put a coat on! Most people are wearing overalls, and jackets anyway so u dont really feel it! And TR greastop hats are great for keeping your head dry!
