Chris - I would suggest avoiding very fine lining - by which I mean 1 pixel wide. Try your yellow lining at 2 or even 3 pixels wide if it is a large texture and that should cure the breaking up effect that can occur with fine lining in the sim.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the replies. I don't know what i'd do without this forum, probably give up!
I have been doing a bit of experimenting and have still not come to a conclusion. The original textures, for example the tank sides, were 512 wide and the yellow lining was 1 pixel wide (with aliasing).
I have tried textures at half side, ie 256 for the tank sides, but still no better results. I thought it was the .tga files but a bitmap was the same too! I will try widening the lining, but having had a look at kevin's Earl Of Merioneth in TGAtools2, the lining is 1 pixel wide and looks fine in MSTS.
Incidentally, the .tga files are 24bit into 3D Canvas, I assume this doesn't have to be lowered?
This is a last ditch attempt now, if anyone can tell me what i'm doing wrong, i would be grateful.
For a nice free zip file containing a 3d canvas file and some textures, click here
Thanks again
Chris

Chris,
You're a couple of weeks too early, I haven't quite got there with the 3D canvas tutorial
A library would be difficult due to variety.
Chimneys:
I used to start with a cylinder and do 2 or 3 extrudes to get the base, from the plan - similarly with the top, but my "flare extrude" plugin does the job quicker now.
Domes - can also use the same plugin with negative values to build a dome, otherwise you have to weld half a sphere to a cylinder.
To wrap the flat bases around the boiler, multi select the 4 symmetrical points and use the right mouse drag to move them down till they hit the boiler.
The lathe tool may also be an option, but beware of poly counts.
If you can hang on for a week, I'll try and get it in Lesson 6...

Hi All,
Yes, its me again, asking for some more advice!! Maybe one day i'll be able to give some back. Anyway, I am slowy getting the hang of 3d canvas now, apart from one part - the texturing!
Everything seems to turn out bland-ish. Compare my effort with the well built talylyn loco (below). You can clearly make out the shape and curves of the loco - on mine everything seems to be bland and blend into one. Does anyone have any magic settings for texturing in 3d canvas or any tips on how to make the loco look a bit more, well..., talylyn quality!!
Thanks for your time, Chris

Aha - a couple of "problems" there...
When you apply the textures, take not of the lighting options for the material, they should look something like:
Diffuse 75 Specular 1 (normal) 50 (shiny) 75 (extra shiny)
Ambient 20 Transucent 0
I suspect you had specular = 0 so all your textures are "bright" - no shadows.
One of the 3D Canvas tutorials mentions the settings
To fix... adjust your material settings, select each object and run the "Update Texture" plugin from the tools menu...

Things like the brass work on Dolgoch also look more realistic because they are proper brass textures, not just plain colours... I would have thought that that would make it look more defined, (ie with the varying textures you can make out the shape a bit better) It looks very good though so well done with it so far.

Ok sorry this is so far on, but I have missed this for a while. Who's is that Mudhen and is it a Trainsim model and can we have it and a bunch of other silly questions?smudge5609 wrote:
Then how come I can't export my loco from 3D Canvas? It can't be too complicated - I've only just started.
Thanks
