BIN will not install
I have a completely clean install of MSTS which is working fine. Train.exe shows file version 1.16.5.912 with a value of Patch v1.4. The date of the file shows as 12/12/2001.
When trying to install BIN version 1.7.102222 I get the message that this train.exe file is not a valid previous version.
The same thing happens with version 1.7.051922. What am I doing wrong?
Rob.

Hi Rob
Your train.exe is too new (mines the same).
Download the update........which for you(and me) will be a backdate.
When asked overwrite........then bin will install.
Cheers

Re: BIN will not install
Hi Rob and Jon,
Welcome to the forums Rob.
In no way do I want to confuse things, and Rob, if your MSTS is running as required then all's well.
However, my Train.exe when (right clicked-properties) shows exactly the same values on Version Tab as yours(Rob). It is an original 2001 copy (updated via the MSTS web site)
The point to this is I can Install/Uninstall any version of the BinPatch with impunity (least I could yesterday
).
This is worth airing in case some other factor is at work here.
What do you think Jon? Or of course anyone else.

Hi Doug
I believe there are two versions of the Microsoft Update - both report the same version number, but one is recognised by the Bin patch and the other isn't.

Hi Alan,
A case of SNABU then ('f' changed).
You takes pot luck as to which one you get! Worth knowing.
I'm going to to copy my Train.exe somewhere well out of the way.
This makes me think, dangerous I know.
Which one is on the 'New' realeses of MSTS Explosiv ect. Because they are 'updated' arn't they?

Re: BIN will not install
Hi Doug
If confused then look at the size of the 'Train.exe'.
If its around 3.97Mb then its the old version (which will bin patch)
If its nearer 4.5Mb then its the post 2003 (and will not bin patch)
Its a shame because the later larger Train.exe was more stable, and had the phone Bill removed when crashing (MS stopped collecting data 2002).
However George worked from the version which is globally freely available.
I'm only guessing, but the Explosiv version could be the 4.5Mb.
Cheers

Re: BIN will not install
Hi Jon,
Size of Train.exe 3.97. BUT no Phone Bill message after a MSTS crash. Just Train.exe has encountered a problem and neends to close. An error log is created. I seem to have a Hy-Bred here?
I should say my MSTS is working as well as can be expected.
So I ain't touching it.

That is the phone Bill message............. I think there is only one confused person round here.........
Whats annoying is that error log takes upto a couple of mins to write........and is going nowhere.
Generally since backdating (bin patching) I right click TS in the taskbar and say end programme......which it still does.
Cheers

Hi Again Jon,
Am I confusing that message, with the one refered to as Send Don't Send?
I think I'm not much help.
Sorry if I've muddied the waters.

Re: BIN will not install
Hi Doug
Yes that is the message.
Basically its around a 37Kb text file which gives diagnostics of the system just before the crash (you'll find it in the main TS folder).
Its the integration of the system that takes the couple of mins.
These could have been useful to MS while they were still developing.
Cheers

Re: BIN will not install
Just to muddy the waters even further......
The original version of train.exe which did not work was from a genuine Microsoft disc, part number X06-20670. I've had it for about 5 years or so, might even be 6 now.
Nevertheless, being selfish, I have now got BIN up and running. Now perhaps I'll go and buy that Feather River route.
Rob.

Hi Rob,
Selfish? None of that it's your hobby after all.
Do not let our to and froing put you off. We all learnt that way. Some more than others.
(diesel fumes you know)
By the way come back when ever your stuck.

Re: BIN will not install
I nam not sure that I completely understand what has been said previously.
But I have a modern version of MSTS bought not all that long ago over the internet. I ordered it as the Explosiv version but it is labelled Microsoft and the cover says "Now with 2 new locomotives, 7 new rolling stock and more!" Nevertheless I installed the latest downloaded Microsoft official patch.
Its characteristics are exactly the same as the orginal poster's ( who had trouble installing bin) except that curiously the file is dated 11 Dec 2001 and not 12 Dec 2001.
The train.exe is 3.9 Mb and bin installs promptly.
