MSTSbin - odd things happening & not sure if this is cause!

Hi all.

Due to an increasingly geriatric PC, I've been away from MSTS for quite a while, but fancied giving it a go now a have a new machine and on the basis of the good things I've heard about MSTSbin.

However, I'm having problems. I think I've got it installed OK, inasmuch as my system (a new one running Win XP Home) says that my version of train.exe is "Patch version 1.4" and that it's "file version 1.16.5.912".

However, I've just tried to install and run a loco (Deltic 55009) with the recent MSTSbin-compatible cab (by Howard Payton, file number 14963), and my PC says it failed to generate cab view.

I have checked the usual things, i.e. that 55009.eng refers to the correct .cvf cabview file, and that the cabview file in turn refers to the correct texture files in my common.cab\class55-1 folder - and I can see nothing at all amiss.

I'm wondering what I've done wrong here.

Thanks very much in anticipation of all your help. I'm slowly remembering just how incredibly frustrating MSTS can be.

On the other hand if I get back into it I might just bring Ye'll Hev Hed Yerr Tea Part 3 into the world for friends of a certain variety of Type 2 - it might really be quite good with a bit of judicious end-changing allowed...!

Cheers all

Hi Mick
Nice to see you back.
That cabview was compatible with an in between version of Bin (1.5.7).
Unfortunately its not compatible with the earlier bin, default non-bin, and more importantly later versions of Bin.
Get this programme and it'll convert it for you.

Jon, thanks very much for your swift (instant!) reply. Yes, I've been having another look through the manual (I wish my Czech were better ;-) ) and see that it describes the changes from 1.5.7 to 1.6.

I'll give the programme you suggest a whirl (and in all probability be back whingeing on this forum again within half an hour...!).

Cheers!

Well, some success - I do now (thank you very much) have a working Deltic cab, but only in one direction, i.e. I can't swap cabs by pressing the [1] key. So I'm not really any better off than if I didn't have MSTSbin installed at all!

Don't know what's happening here. Have tried with the 'test' consist supplied by the MSTSbin author, but MSTS won't load that (claiming an error reading train database file, being an error at line 154 of loco.eng and at line 55 of test.wag).

Any ideas? (Sorry, but the documentation for MSTSbin isn't really the best! It would be tremendous if someone in the English-speaking MSTS community could produce a good English translation [no disrespect to the author, whose English is much better than my Czech will ever be no doubt])

Thanks again.
mick

PS Does anyone know how to make italics etc. work in these postings? I used to just be able to select the relevant text and click the italics button but it doesn't work any more.

Nothing works today; I shall go to bed.

Hi Mick
It would seem you haven't actually managed to get the Bin patched version of Train.exe installed.
If you look in the manual it shows a picture of where to look in properties to see what version is installed.

Hi Mick !

You are referring to a Czech manual ? There is an English Manual_eng.doc file in the unzipped MSTSBin 1.7 folder !

An easy way to check if you're running bin or not is to run the sim and then press f5 three times. If the upper left side of your screen is filled with data, you are running bin. If there is no text at all, you're running the original program.

Yes, but (and, as I say, I don't mean any disrespect whatever to the author) I'm struggling a little with the English (and, to be fair, it doesn't cover installation).

I've checked that MSTSbin is properly installed - and MSTSbin itself insists that it I am running the latest version of MSTSbin (I've also checked that the two "translated DLL" files are in the right places.

However, in MSTS itself, there is no evidence that it has been installed: swapping cabs does not work, and, as suggested above, F5 doesn't bring up any data beyond the usual.

In addition, under "properties" it still gives the file version as just "Patch 1.4" and 1.16.5.912.

Can anybody offer any further suggestions as to why it might not be installing?

Thanks again - the help is much appreciated.

Hi Mick !

Looks like that you have not installed MSTSBin 1.7.0103 properly ?

Ignore the "Properties" of the Train.exe and look at the date. If it is the Patch 1.4 one then it's date is December 2001 and of it the MSTSBin 1.7.0103 patch then the Train.exe will have a January 2007 date. It's that simple.

The other evidence of having MSTSBin 1.7 installed is it's MSTSBIN-BACKUP folder in the Train Simulator folder, the latter then also containing it's Uninst_MSTS Patch*.* files.

You switch to cabs of other locos in the same consist in the F9 window, highlight the loco you want to switch to and providing it has an *.eng file pressing the #1 key will transfer you to it's cab !

Yes, done all that - I have the folders and the Patch 1.6.122319.exe programme insists "you already have the most recent version of MSTS Bin Patch on your system".

However, train.exe is not being updated - as you say, it's a December 2001 version.

Any more ideas, or is it just not going to install on my machine? It would nonetheless be at least of interest to know why it won't install.

Thanks

Interestingly, a further symptom which may, I wonder, shed some light on what is happening here: I've just downloaded and tried to install the most recent version of MSTS Bin Patch 1.7.010302 - and exactly the same thing happens: my computer tells me I already have the most recent version of the patch installed. This, of course, could not be true: even if I had any version installed (which I appear not to), it certainly could not be this version.

Any help?

cheers.

To make it easier for you to see the relevant points of what I said in my posts Jon linked to, here is what you need to do to get rid of a MSTSBin patch if it's Uninst_MSTS Patch*.exe did not do it all !

DELETE the following if present:
MSTSBIN_BACKUP folder
Uninst_MSTS Patch*.* files
Train.exe

COPY / PASTE a DECEMBER 2001 Train.exe into the folder the Launcher.exe is in.

Uninstalling MSTSbin doesn't delete my train.exe file, though it does delete the other things you mention. My train.exe file is dated 11 December 2001 (timed at 15:27 hours) and measures 3,997 KB.

Is that no good?

If it isn't the right one, from where would I copy/paste an alternative train.exe file?

Thanks very much.

That is the one which must be present in the Train Simulator folder for the MSTSBin patches to install, providing that there is no MSTSBIN_BACKUP folder in the Train Simulator folder. If there is then DELETE it and run the Patch 1.7.010302highmem.exe if you have more than 512 Mb RAM or the *lowmem.exe if not !
