That is the one which must be present in the Train Simulator folder for the MSTSBin patches to install, providing that there is no MSTSBIN_BACKUP folder in the Train Simulator folder. If there is then DELETE it and run the Patch 1.7.010302highmem.exe if you have more than 512 Mb RAM or the *lowmem.exe if not !

Ah, by George, that DID work - still don't fully understand quite what happened previously, but I can now change ends to my heart's content.

Now all I need to do is try and get the activity editor to load any non-default routes without crashing on me so's I can write a few more activities with Proppa Traction!

Very many thanks to both of yous for your help and patience (which exceeds mine!)

The most likely causes for it doing that on some computers are that your Desktop Resolution is not set at 16 colors, like in 1024x768x16, or having too many View items ticked in the AE. Un-tick them all and select only the ones you need when working on an activity !

Lack of available memory could be another reason, too many other programmes running, like an Internet connection, firewall and virus checker, etc. !

Thanks for that (again!), Otto. Yes, I did try turning down the number of colours in MSTS before running the editors, although I haven't double-checked my desktop resolution (though pretty certain its set to the maximum setting) - mind, it does load SOME routes (as I say, like the default ones), so I wonder whether that can be the problem. What screen settings do you find to be the best?

Now that it will load some routes, I can do as you suggest and unselect some 'view' items.

As regards available memory, while my computer is pretty much brand new and has 2 GB of RAM (so the total amount of memory shouldn't be a problem in itself), I have got firewalls, virus-scanner and internet connection on constantly, so perhaps as you say these could be causing a conflict or could be wasting memory.

Apologies, I'm taking this thread off-topic - if I don't get it sorted I'll post to the proper place!

Anyways, thanks again, and hopefully an MSTS Bin-enhanced Ye'll Yev Hed Yerr Tea Part 3 is just around the corner (or should I say around the Horseshoe Bend).

Kind regards
Mick

Hi Mick !

With that amount of RAM installed you should have no problems with the Editors, I have not with 1.5 Gb installed.

But I keep reading that others with similar specs do occasionally get problems, whether that is caused by too many other programs running in the background or by their graphics cards is difficult to get to the bottom of.

The MSTS editors like a Desktop Resolution of 1024x768x16 colors best, it having been created back in 2001 when large size monitors with higher resolutions were still a luxury. Changing it in the MSTS Options will not affect the Editors !

Using higher Desktop resolutions when using the editors makes everything they display in a reduced format more difficult to work with, ruining your eyes ! ;-)

Good advice is to set your Arrange Icons by option for the Desktop to Align to Grid to prevent all of them getting jumbled and re-arranged by the resolution change ! :(

Ah, well there you go: I've just changed my display settings as you suggest, taken out a couple of "view" options in AE, and, just as you say, now I'm able to open activities on East Coast Express.

You, sir, are a star. May generations of young children be taught songs in your honour. :-)

Glad to have been able to help, Mick !

Not all my own doing, just repeating what I have learned from others and experimenting myself during 5 years of battling with MSTS and it's editors ! :)

Take care, O t t o.

Mick edit the eng file to raise the limit - lol

Thinkn these are the 2 lines

MonitoringDeviceCriticalLevel( 115 )

MonitoringDeviceTriggerOnOverspeed( 110 )

Think you increase the values in these 2 lines - never done it myself maybe one of the eng gurus could confirm

Cheers
