Bug: Penalty Light Issue

I only found out after reading the following thread at TS.com:

http://forums.flightsim.com/ts/dcboard. ... 8748&page=

It appears the latest version has a problem with the penalty light parameter in the ENG file. If the headlight is on the dim settings, a penalty application will turn the light off (I haven't yet checked the sphere - just the external view), and the high headlight setting remains on and unaffected. This kinda' puts a kink in my trainset product line, as all locomotives (several dozen) use the penalty light parameter (same goes for the freeware sets). :(

Cheers!

Hi Marc, I have noticed that on several of my engines the lights don't seem to work correctly,ie:on high setting, but it is not on them all and that's why I have not bothered bringing it up,I will try and Quote some file
Names tomorrow.

Hi Mick
Its a setting for lights that make them flash if the emergency brake is used.
I think the only UK outline loco that does this is Uncle Reds Class 66.

Do you mean the lights flash when you overspeed and the penalty brake kicks in, or do they flash if you apply the emergency brake yourself? I always delete this penalty brake part of the eng file-its so riduculous especially for older stock, or at least modify it so I have some leeway.

I haven't got Uncle Reds 66, so no wonder I knew nothing about it.

Also not sure why I should ever want penalty lights. Don't see what use they would be really. Are they in use on British locos generally?

Penalty lights were once quite common here in the States. The following is an animated Mars example:

These were to be switched on during a penalty brake application by the user, but no longer work with the latest Bin patch. :(

Just a clarification for our wonderful British friends across the pond, in the US, high speed passenger engines were often equipped with a rotating Mars light or a Gyralite headlight (the upper light, usually, on an F or E unit from EMD or a PA from ALCO). It's purpose was to alert pedestrians and motorists of the approach of a high speed train. These lights were equipped with two lights, one with a clear lens which produced a gyrating white light and was normally used in regular operation. The other had a red lens and would automatically come on if the train went into an Emergency Brake application, either from a broken air hose or by engineer application. This was to warn workers and opposing trains that this high speed train has just gone into emergency braking and may well become a high speed derailment! Time to do an about face and run away from the tracks!

Marc's engines are equipped with these red Mars or Gyralites and they go on when you go into Emergency. The term "Penalty" comes from the game, wherein you are usually assessed a penalty period of time during which you cannot release the brakes if you go into Emergency.

Since the advent of Bin 1.6.1022 this light is on, with the white light, whenever the headlight is on full, giving a nice pink glow to the countryside. :x It worked "as advertised" under Bin 1.6.0922. Marc has detailed the .eng file entries for this light above.

Hopefully this sheds some light. :)

In a similar vein to this - is it just me or since the last patch has the cone of light started to ignore the TimeOfDay setting? I've got a dozen or so that I set up on the previous patch and I'm sure were working fine and now they're on whatever the time.

And as a double aside has TimeOfDay ( 1 ) ever worked properly - i.e. on in the day and off at night?

Hi Alex
There's a similar post on TS.com.
I tend to only use TimeOfDay (2), and thats working for me still.

As I mentioned above, the Emergency brake red light problem does not exist for 3DTrains' locomotives with version 1.6.0922. Is there any way to keep that version available for those who use 3DTrains' F-units but don't need animated doors or pantographs? I still have a copy that I use but it is no longer available on the download site that I can find.

Thanks for your consideration.

I think the proper way for dealing with this is to wait for George to look into it, after more pressing operational items have been taken care off.

There are also other lights matters to be dealt with which to me are less important and can wait, like no dipped headlights on some locos or headlight beams from rear cab locos but no headlights themselves lit up, some of which may have to do with their parameters in *.eng files ?

O.K., I have copies of MSTS 1.2/1.4, 1.5.7 and 1.6.1 but we don't really want to finish up having more for every version of MSTSBin ?

Understood. It did not seem that any of the persons who had responded were in a position to look into it, much less do anything about the issue.

Thank you for letting me know that you are looking at these issues, Otto.

Neither am I, sorry !

But I do pass on to George what I think is important, him being the only one who can advice on what corrective action to take, having modified the respective code !

Unfortunately, Otto, what you might find important might not match what other folks find important. IMHO, priorities should be set to ensure that default parameters are met before adding gizmos and gimmicks. Otherwise, payware folk, such as myself, would have a tough time supporting MSTS Bin if our products don't perform as advertised.

Don't get me wrong - I love the enhancements that MSTS Bin brings, and I'm also thankful to George that his efforts are allowing me to do things that weren't otherwise possible. However, the support email I have to deal with because something doesn't work is beginning to pile up.

Yes, I know that you do occasionally have his ear and I was encouraged that you were obviously aware of the issue. I don't know about other issues as I made a hasty retreat to 1.6.0922 when the Mars Light issue surfaced. There I shall remain, happy with my MSTSBin, until George (and Marc) says that problem has been fixed. :)
