Modiying a .eng file

Getting the physics right is essential for the simulation, having an 0-6-0 tank engine with the hauling power of a Class 66 just ruins the fun!

Modiying a .eng file

Post by andrewtoplis »

Hi Guys,

I have a few questions, please forgive the novice nature of them!

1. I want to modify the .eng file of a narrow gauge loco I downloaded. The loco seems to have the scotsman data, so is faintly ludicrous. Do I need permission from the original builder before I start changing things (its just for me though, not for download)?

2. If I change one variable, does it affect all the others? I thought to reduce the tractive effort (and presumably the force as well), to make it less powerful (would this mean it is slower?). Will I then need to reduce the steam generation figures and boiler length etc to stop it blowing off all the time? What is the difference between maxeffort and maxforce? Just the unit of measurement? What is the equation to convert TE into Force?

3. I have one good realistic .eng file for a similar proportioned loco, is it possible to just copy its values over and change others where I have the actual figure? I wanted to use the correct figures where I have them, as I am going for realism...although some might be 'best guess' figures.

Many Thanks,
Andy

Ps does anyone know of any NG loco with good physics? Truescale 2ft prefferably!!

Supergoods' eng file calculator (File ID: 4501 in the downloads section) is a good place to start. Happy modding!

Cheers
